The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce Sue Soolsma of the Capilano University Blues as the 2025-26 CCAA Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.
In just her second season at the helm of the Blues, Soolsma guided Capilano to an outstanding 19-1 regular-season record in the PACWEST conference, finishing first in a competitive six-team league. Her leadership helped the Blues achieve remarkable consistency and resilience throughout the season.
Beth Clark, CCAA National Volleyball Convenor, said, "Sue Soolsma has exemplified what it means to lead with both skill and heart. Her ability to develop her players on and off the court, foster accountability, and create a culture of resilience is truly inspiring. This award is a testament to her dedication, her mentorship, and the incredible season she guided the Capilano Blues through."
Under Soolsma’s direction, Capilano demonstrated significant improvement in overall performance, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. The Blues reduced unforced errors while strengthening team communication and accountability, creating a disciplined and resilient squad that consistently rose to the occasion in tight matches.
Soolsma’s impact was also reflected in the success of her players. Abby Betker was named PACWEST Player of the Year, Top Outside Hitter, a PACWEST First Team All-Star, and a CCAA All-Canadian. Nnya Mbaoma earned PACWEST First Team All-Star honours, while Natalie Rourke was named a PACWEST Second Team All-Star and Top Middle Blocker.
Beyond the statistics, Soolsma has fostered a culture built on discipline, teamwork, and accountability. She actively mentors her athletes in leadership development, goal setting, and character building, helping them grow not only as competitors but also as confident individuals prepared for success beyond volleyball.
“Sue has done an incredible job with this group,” said Capilano Director of Athletics Novell Thomas. “Despite injuries and the usual setbacks that come with a season, the team maintained a consistently high level of play. I’m extremely happy for Sue and her assistant coach Austyn.”
Soolsma’s influence extends beyond Capilano University. With 20 years of coaching experience, she has worked at the collegiate, high school, and club levels. She currently runs the volleyball academy for School District 44 in North Vancouver, serves as a director at Powerwest Volleyball Club, and mentors young coaches while coaching the club’s U15 team.
Her dedication to developing athletes and building strong volleyball communities continues to make a lasting impact both within the Blues program and across the sport.
