Women's Week 10 Volleyball
A pair of matches will highlight Week 10 of the regular season
We enter Week 10 of the PACWEST volleyball season this weekend with a pair of doubleheader matches on the slate.
COTR Avalanche @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 23, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is a big weekend for both schools with four points separating them in the standings and their final meeting of the regular season with time running out for playoff positioning.
If the postseason started today, the Avalanche would be in and the Royals out. However, both schools have eight matches remaining so plenty of movement can happen down the stretch. As far as their own head-to-head meetings, both schools beat the other in five sets in Cranbrook in mid-November.
The Avalanche (5-7) are coming off a bye weekend and will make the lengthy bus ride to Vancouver. Two weeks ago, they paid a visit to Abbotsford and split the weekend with the CBC Bearcats, getting their monies worth playing in a pair of five setters. Eloise Newsome and Hannah Gray lead their offensive push and have combined for 218 kills this season and will need to play a big role this weekend to claim victory.
Meanwhile the Royals (3-9) are also coming off a bye weekend and are searching for answers on a five-match losing streak. Oddly enough, their last victory was against the Avalanche on November 14th in a reverse sweep. They are on the outside looking in and desperately need a win this weekend to climb in the standings. Lauren Bowman will need to have a big weekend to help the Royals find success.
The rematch is set for Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm.
Capilano Blues @ CBC Bearcats – Friday January 23, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The top ranked Blues (13-1) have clinched a playoff spot with six matches remaining but are coming off their first loss of the season last weekend in a split at VIU. They are on the road for the second straight weekend trying to earn the #1 seed at CBC, a school they swept twice in November. Abi Betker and Nnya Mbaoma lead the offence with 190 and 183 kills respectively.
The Bearcats (4-10) are starting to peak at just the right time, winning three in a row, including back-to-back sweeps last weekend at Camosun. Of their four wins this season, three of them have come during their last three matches. They are two points out of a playoff spot with and will be at home for the final time in the regular season with six matches to go. CBC is hosting the PACWEST championships in a few weeks, the Bearcats are fighting hard to get a couple more matches on their home floor.
On Saturday afternoon the Blues and Bearcats will meet in the rematch at 5:00pm.
