Bronze Medal Semi
After falling on Thursday, the VIU Mariners meet the St. Clair Saints on Friday looking to advance
Aigles d’Ahuntsic 1 – VIU Mariners 0
A goal in the 85th minute that got by keeper Kaiden Thorpe was the difference maker as the PACWEST champion Mariners fall at the CCAA national championship in Red Deer.
Thursday night the Quebec champions pressured the Mariners backline and were buzzing around the net all game recording 10 shots in their semifinal victory. Thorpe made three saves in the setback while the Mariners offence didn’t generate a shot on net as the Aigles keeper didn’t need to make a save recording the clean sheet.
The loss moves the Mariners to the bronze medal side of the bracket where they will face the St. Clair Saints from Windsor in a bronze semi on Friday at 4:30pm PST. The Saints lost their quarterfinal on Wednesday 1-0 to the MSVU Mystics before bouncing back on Thursday to beat the Concordia Thunder 4-0 to continue their season and meet the Mariners. The Saints won the OCAA for the first time since 1988 to advance to this national championship.
The winner of this semifinal advances to the CCAA bronze medal game, while the loser’s season comes to a close. The bronze medal game is scheduled Saturday morning should the Mariners advance.
