Women's Soccer Saturday Rewind
The Mariners and Royals win in the rain
VIU Mariners 3 – Capilano Blues 0
On a cold, wet, miserable day in Squamish, the Mariners and keeper Kaiden Thorpe recorded another clean sheet on Saturday against the hometown Blues.
After a scoreless first half, the Mariners struck just 17 seconds into the second half. Jada Kamerman was allowed to carry the ball down the right side of the pitch before sliding into the middle of the field. She delivered a beautiful through ball, into the 18-yard box to Erin Jensen who tracked it down and booted a right footed shot past the Blues keeper Rachel Laakmann to open the scoring.
Five minutes later, with the rain falling Jade Dillabough outraced several Blues defenders down the left side all the way to the goal line before crossing a pass through the crease to Kamerman who just tapped it home for her seventh of the season.
In the 77th minute the Mariners really put the game out of reach. Maggie Thurbide sent a corner kick into the middle of the 18-yard box for Mary Nicholls who jumped high in the air to redirect the kick with a beautiful header into the back of the net.
Thorpe needed to make two saves earning her eighth clean sheet of the season.
Douglas Royals 1 – Langara Falcons 0
The Royals move to within a point of the Falcons for second place in the PACWEST standings and clinched the final playoff spot with a clean sheet over the visiting Falcons in the rain on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half, Ashlynn Grim finally got a goal on the board in the 82nd minute from long range. She took a pass, controlled the ball and with her left foot delivered a shot high in the air that somehow got over the fingertips of the Falcons keeper and into the back of the net. It was a heartbreaker for the Falcons coming from such a far distance.
