Women's Soccer Sunday Recap
The Mariners clinch and the Royals and Blues play to a scoreless draw
A recap of Sunday's PACWEST women's soccer games
VIU Mariners 5 – Langara Falcons 0
For the second time in as many days, the Mariners shut out the Falcons on the Island and in the process clinched first-place in the PACWEST, receiving a bye into the gold medal match later this month.
They opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a bizarre looking goal that would stand as the game winner. With a ball looping towards the goal, the Falcons keeper misplayed it as it sailed over her head with Jada Kamerman sneaking in behind her at the goal line and knocked it off her head into the net.
The Mariners extended their lead 10 minutes later off a corner. The high arching kick was sent towards the front of the net with Hannah Wagner leaping up to get a head on it to redirect the corner into the back of the net for her second goal in as many days. The Mariners carried the two-goal advantage into the half.
In the 54th minute the home side and a familiar face struck again, but this time on a penalty kick. Jada Kamerman tracked down a long pass into the Falcons corner before it went out of bounds. She turned and made a couple of moves to get into the 18-yard box where she was tripped up resulting in the PK. She stepped up to the dot and gently kicked it into the bottom right corner with the keeper going the other way for her second of the contest.
The Mariners continued their dominance and added another marker in the 77th minute. Emma Thornton was sent in all alone after a beautiful tap pass from Courtney Ingram. Thornton carried the ball in on a challenging keeper and buried it into the bottom right corner. Ingram then finished the scoring in the extra time with a long shot that got over the keeper’s hand and into the top right corner.
With the victory, the Mariners clinch first place and know they will play for PACWEST gold with a bye right into the championship. Both teams enjoy a Thanksgiving bye this coming weekend.
Douglas Royals 0 – Capilano Blues 0
Nothing was settled in the PACWEST standings on Sunday afternoon as the Royals and Blues played to a 0-0 draw. The Royals remain four points up on the Blues for third place and the final playoff spot with two games remaining on the schedule.
Blues’ keeper Rachel Laakmann had the busier day making five saves to keep her club in the contest. On the other end, Vanessa Chung wasn’t tested as much but still made two saves for the clean sheet.
Both teams will enjoy a Thanksgiving bye week and then prepare for the final weekend of the regular season on October 18-19.
