Clean Sheet Sunday
The Langara Falcons and Capilano Blues record a clean sheet on Sunday afternoon
Capilano Blues 1 - VIU Mariners 0
What a difference a day makes. After Mariners smoked the Blues 5-0 on Saturday, the Blues showed great character and came back on Sunday with a clean sheet of their own to split the weekend series.
Blues’ keeper Rachel Laakmann was tested making a total of five saves. She finally got some offensive support in the 76th minute on a play she started. She first cleared the ball with a long kick into the middle of the field which was played by forward Kianna Sardari delivering a through ball to the sprinting Sophie Pather down the left side. With a defender in her back pocket, Pather took a looping shot that carried over the outstretched arm of Mariners keeper Brooke Ingram and bounced into the back of the net for a backbreaking goal.
Following the marker the Blues handled most of the Mariners pressure and kept the ball out of their own end to watch the clock tick down to the final whistle.
The win was the Blues (1-5) first of the season and the Mariners (5-1) first loss of the campaign.
Langara Falcons 1 – Douglas Royals 0
For the second straight day the Falcons and Royals showed how evenly they matchup with another game ending in a one goal advantage.
After a scoreless first half, the Falcons took the lead in the 60th minute when Abbigail Gade was sent in one-on-one with the Royals keeper receiving a gorgeous pass. She beat the Royals defender to the ball, before her initial chip shot in the box was redirected by the challenging keeper to the left side. With the keeper out of position following the slide challenge, Gade jumped on the loose ball and had a wide open net to bury the shot.
The goal proved to be just enough as the Falcons (4-1) scored the win with keeper Kate Bonozew making two saves for the clean sheet to earn a win on Sunday after their tie on Saturday against the Royals (1-4-1).
