Women’s Saturday Soccer Recap
VIU Mariners 5 – Capilano Blues 2
The Mariners scored four times in the first half, including three within five minutes and cruised the lopsided win.
Mary Huggill opened the scoring on a scrambly play in the Blues crease in the 24th minute. The Mariners kept the Blues pinned deep and their defenders off-balanced running around out of position when the bouncing ball came to Huggill who blasted a shot past the keeper Rachel Laakmann.
Under three minutes later Courtney Ingram tallied a second for the visitors when she intercepted a pass from Laakmann and immediately buried it past the diving keeper. Then just a minute later with the public address announcer still announcing the Ingram goal, Jada Kamerman intercepted a clearing attempt by the Blues backline and sent a gorgeous crossing pass in front of the net to a leaping Emma Thornton who booted into the open net for the eventual game winning goal.
The Mariners were not done, in the 40th minute Kamerman again sent a beautiful pass from the right side into the middle of the field to find a wide-open Ingram who made no mistake on a one-timer into the net.
After the half break the Blues finally got on the board in the 49th minute when Kianna Sardari received a pretty pass from Leah Herald that allowed her to get behind the backline and a clear shot at the net for her first goal of the game.
The Mariners answered again in the 51st minute. With a couple of assists in the game, Kamerman decided to get one for herself and beat the defender on a one-on-one move then blasted the ball into the net for her club’s fifth goal which also deflated the Blues.
Sardari scored her second goal of the game in 53rd minute with her team continuing to push. The initial shot from Sophie Pather ricocheted off the far post and came right to Saradari who scored the final goal of the game as the Mariners collected their third win of the season.
Langara Falcons 1 – Douglas Royals 0
It was a game that didn’t generate much with each keeper needing to make four saves.
The only goal in the game came in the 20th minute when Madison Hung won a loose ball battle with a Royals defender and keeper Estelle Gonzales. There appeared to be some confusion between the two Royals which led to Hung jumping on a rolling ball and knocked it into the open net to give the Falcons the lead and the eventual game winner.
From there, both teams were solid keeping the offensive chances to a minimum with strong play from the backline. In the end keeper Kate Banozew recorded the clean sheet leading her club to their third win of the campaign.
