Royals Claim Victory
The Douglas Royals earned an impressive win on Friday to end their season
Lauren Clements caught fire and led the Douglas Royals to a season ending victory on Friday afternoon in Montreal at the CCAA national championship.
Playing in the Placement Match after back-to-back losses, the Royals would not be denied against the ACAA champion St. Thomas Tommies earning a lopsided 77-48 victory behind the play of Clements who collected a double double partway through the second quarter. She would finish with a game high 23 points on 62% shooting and pulled down 18 rebounds, collected six assists and four steals.
In addition to the play of Clements, the Royals had secondary scoring as well with nine different players hitting the scoresheet. Mackenzie Dalphond also finished with a double-double of 15 points and 12 boards, named Player of the Game and Denise Mendoza came off the bench to drop 16 points in a very efficient 7-9 shooting.
As a team they shot 46% from the field and ran away with the score in the second quarter outscoring the Tommies 21-8. Defensively the Royals held their opponents to 21% shooting and created 14 turnovers.
The experience for the Royals is invaluable and will feed their hunger going into next season. This game also marked the final collegiate game for veterans Laini Glover and Avnoor Waraich as fifth year seniors.
