Men's Soccer Saturday Recap
Finals from the final Saturday of the regular season
Douglas Royals 2 – Langara Falcons 1
The Royals clinched second place in the PACWEST men’s soccer standings with a one goal victory over the visiting Falcons on Saturday afternoon and the rain and cold temperatures.
It wasn’t until the 27th minute when the Royals would get on the board. Keishean Francois was allowed to carry the ball deep into the right corner of the Falcons zone and ricocheted a pass off a defender and out of bounds for throw in. Francois worked quickly getting the ball to Spencer Mellet in the 18-yard box. He controlled the throw in with a couple of nice moves before squeaking a left footed shot just inside the near post and into the back of the net.
In the 43rd minute the Royals and Mellet would add to the scoring. The Royals foot work on this particular goal was highlight reel material and was started by Matteo Falcone up the right side. He crossed a pass that went through a teammate’s lags, to a streaking forward who tapped a pass to Mellet at the top of the 18-yard box who then spun and fired a low shot into the same corner as he did on his first goal giving his club a two-goal advantage at the break.
The Falcons cut the lead in half in the 48th minute when Taigo Shimada controlled a high looping pass into the 18-yard box. The pass somehow slipped pass the Royals backline to Shimada who made no mistake and blasted a shot just underneath the bar for his fourth of the season.
That’s as close as the Falcons would come with the Royals hanging on for the win.
VIU Mariners 0 – Capilano Blues 0
Nothing was solved in Squamish on Saturday as the Mariners and Blues played to a scoreless draw. The single point sets up an important game on Sunday for both teams with just three points separating them in the standings.
