Chargers Tip Off
The Camosun Chargers open the CCAA national championship on Wednesday
Camosun Chargers vs Dynamiques de Brébeuf – Wednesday March 18, 3:00pm
The Camosun Chargers will open the CCAA national championship on Wednesday afternoon when they meet the RSEQ champion Dynamiques de Brébeuf at 3:00pm in Nanaimo.
Coming into the championship tournament, the Chargers have had a chance to shake off their heartbreaking defeat in the PACWEST gold medal game on a buzzer beater. They have had two weeks to prepare and will be ready to rebound as one of the best wildcard teams in recent memory.
Defence will no doubt play an important role against the high-flying offence of the Dynamiques. The post players of the Chargers will need to know where Julius Ferguson and Samuel Desrochers are on the floor as the true scoring leaders of the Dynamiques. Ferguson was named the RSEQ tournament MVP and Desrochers was a First Team All-Star, both dropping in over 13 points a game.
As a team the Dynamiques are scoring over 79 points a game and shot 42% from the field during the regular season and finished with a 14-2 record. In the Conference gold medal game, they dominated the Dawson Blues 81-61 en route to defending their RSEQ title.
The Chargers are making their second appearance in the CCAA national championship in three seasons. In 2024 they collected a wildcard berth and finished fourth after falling in the bronze medal game. There are four players from that roster still on the team and they are hungry to improve with a better placing this time around. That experience will be valuable this week for David Finch, Cormick Brown, Cole Belton and Jakob Neufeld. Forward David Featherston also has nationals experience as a member of the Capilano Blues last season.
This will be the first meeting on the national stage between these two schools with plenty on the line. The winner advances to the CCAA semifinals while the loser moves over to the bronze medal side of the bracket.
