Men's Basketball Wraps Up
It's Week 14 of the regular season
The men’s PACWEST basketball schedule wraps up this weekend with three doubleheaders on the hardcourt.
Capilano Blues @ Langara Falcons – Friday February 20, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
It’s a battle for third place as the Blues and Falcons play the first of a home-and-home this weekend with four points separating them in the standings.
With a single win this weekend the Blues (14-8) will clinch third place and will meet the sixth seed in the Conference standings in a playoff quarterfinal. Since the calendar flipped to February, the Blues have been outstanding, winning four straight games, hitting the 100-point plateau twice in the process. They will meet a Falcons team that they haven’t seen since the beginning of November when they split the weekend, winning by five before dropping the next game by a point. Coming into the weekend, their offence has been very good, averaging the second most points per game in the Conference with 87 points.
The Falcons (12-10) need to sweep the Blues this weekend to leapfrog them into third place. They have won three of their last four, with the only loss coming in overtime. Friday night is their final home game of the year with their regular season finale taking place at Capilano on Saturday. They have punched their ticket to the playoffs and will be home seed regardless of what happens this weekend. If they sweep, they finish third and will meet the sixth seed, if they lose one game then they will finish fourth and meet the fifth seed in a quarterfinal.
The rematch between the Blues and Falcons will be played at Capilano on Saturday night at 7:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Camosun Chargers – Friday February 20, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is a big weekend for both schools as they meet for the final time in the regular season. The Chargers are trying to clinch the #1 seed while the Bearcats try to move into the fifth spot in the standings.
The Chargers (17-5) are in a first-place tie with the VIU Mariners but do hold the tiebreaker card after beating them in three of their four meetings, including a sweep last weekend. The Chargers have won seven in a row and are 9-1 on their home floor and are hoping that trend continues this weekend. One of their five losses this season came at the hands of the Bearcats, a 12-point set back at CBC in November. They came back the next day to win by five points, showing some parody between these two schools.
The Bearcats (7-15) will try and draw from that victory over the Chargers to motivate them this weekend. They are currently the sixth seed, two points behind the Okanagan Coyotes for fifth. A pair of wins at Camosun would catapult them in the standings heading into the PACWEST championship tournament. They have really struggled in the month of February losing all four games to date and will need to bounce back against the top seeded Chargers.
The schools meet in the rematch on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
Douglas Royals @ VIU Mariners – Friday February 20, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Mariners come into the weekend trying to secure the #1 seed in the standings and the Royals are trying to play spoiler.
It was a tough road trip for the Mariners (17-5) losing both games at Camosun last week to pull into a tie at the top of the standings heading into the regular season’s final weekend. In order to finish as the #1 seed, they need to sweep the Royals and have the Chargers lose one game to the CBC Bearcats this weekend. If they finish tied in the standings, the Chargers have the tiebreaker card. The Mariners have shown they can score all season as the Conference’s most potent offence with over 93-points a game.
For the Royals (3-19) this is it for the season having already been eliminated from the playoffs. They have only three wins this season, one of which however was against the visiting Mariners on November 7th, winning by three points.
They will meet for the last time this year on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
