The Mariners and Blues win at home
Week 12 of the men’s basketball schedule continued on Friday night with a pair of games that the home teams won.
VIU Mariners 89
Okanagan Coyotes 70
The hometown Mariners continued their winning ways with their eighth straight victory on Friday night.
On the offensive side they shot 39% and nailed 15-three pointers as they cruised to the 19-point win. Four different scorers reached the double-digit plateau led by Keyonte Beals and his 19 points and Kai Leightton’s 16 on a very efficient 5-9 shooting and four-three pointers. Both Winston Cole and Kye Kotapski-Tinga off the bench dropped in 18 for a balanced attack.
The Coyotes shot 37% in the loss led by Phil Holmes Jr’s 17 points and 15 rebounds. Noah Steingart and Oaklen Kowal off the bench each added 18 points for a team high with Kowal hitting six-three pointers.
On Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm, the Mariners (16-3) entertain the Coyotes (7-14) for the final time this season.

Douglas Royals 78
It was the tightest game of Week 12 that the Blues hung onto win in front of their hometown crowd on Friday night.
Their offence shot 49% from the field and had five different scorers drop at least 10 points. Kash Lang led the way with 19 points and Zach Hamed finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. It was a good solid team win for the Blues who take sole possession of third place in the standings with 22 points.
With the loss on Friday night the Royals are officially eliminated from postseason play. They shot 44% and gave the Blues all they could handle but it still wasn’t enough. Derrick Monroe had another brilliant game with a game high 26 points and eight rebounds and Lorenzo Bonamin had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Saturday night the Blues (11-8) and Royals (3-18) will meet for the final time this season at 7:00pm, the last scheduled game of Week 12.
