Men's Basketball Saturday
The Mariners, Chargers and Bearcats claim the win
Week 11 of the men’s basketball schedule is in the books following three final scores on Saturday.
VIU Mariners 100
Capilano Blues 67
The Mariners played a near perfect road game on Saturday earning the weekend sweep at Capilano using balanced scoring and tough defence.
On the offensive side they shot 51%, nailed 12-three pointers and had five players score at least 10 points. Markus Modrovic led his club with 18 points off the bench and Kye Kotapski-Tinga added 17, also coming off the bench. Keyonte Beals was their main threat from downtown, connecting on 4-5 from longe range and finishing with 16 points.
The Blues were held to 37% shooting but did stay somewhat close with 13-three pointers. Zach Klim had a game high 19-points and Kash Lang drained 16 as both players hit three-threes.
Next weekend the Mariners (15-3) will host the Okanagan Coyotes (7-13) and the Blues (10-8) stay at home to entertain the Douglas Royals (3-17).

The visiting Chargers stayed stride for stride with the VIU Mariners a top the PACWEST standings with a weekend sweep, thanks to Saturday’s lopsided win after a massive fourth quarter outscoring the Royals 20-5.
Owen Jones came off the bench to knockdown five-three pointers and finished with a game high 21 points while Jakob Neufeld added 16 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. As a team, the Chargers’ offence shot 42% but were only 6-27 from the three-point line.
The Royals had a halftime lead in this ballgame, but in the second half and particularly the fourth quarter they fell apart. Their offence shot 40% led by Andre Juco’s 15 points and Lorenzo Bonamin added 12.
This coming weekend the Chargers (15-5) will enjoy the bye week, and the Royals (3-17) hit the road for Capilano to meet the Blues (10-8).
CBC Bearcats 100
Okanagan Coyotes 82
The Bearcats erupted in the fourth quarter and outscored the Coyotes 37-18 to earn a weekend split at home.
Their offence shot 40% from the field and had outstanding success from the three-point line hitting 14 from downtown led by the seven from Camden MacDougall off the bench. He finished with 23 points. Dane-Dre Anglin had a game high 30 points and D’Andre Palmer-Ormsby added 26, one assist away from a double-double. Over on the defensive side, they forced 25 turnovers and collected 18 steals.
The Coyotes had a one-point lead heading into the fourth and didn’t have much of an answer for the surging Bearcats in the frame. Overall their offence shot 40% and Phil Holmes Jr was outstanding with 21 points and 16 rebounds in the setback.
With the split the Bearcats (7-11) and Coyotes (7-13) each have 14 points in the standings, but the Bearcats have two games in hand. The ‘Cats open the Week 12 schedule on Thursday night with a visit to the Langara Falcons (9-9) and the Coyotes meet the VIU Mariners (15-3) on the island beginning on Friday.
