The Mariners, Chargers and Coyotes win on Friday night
The road teams earned a Friday night sweep in men’s PACWEST basketball as Week 11 opened up.
VIU Mariners 94
Capilano Blues 80
The visiting Mariners erased a first quarter deficit and came back to score an important win at Capilano on Friday night.
As a team they shot 44% from the field and tallied 12-three pointers led by Kye Kotapski-Tinga off the bench with a game high 28 points. Their offence was balanced as well with Keyonte Beals adding 23 and Kai Leighton chipped in with 13.
The Blues started hot but couldn’t keep up the pace throughout the game but did shoot 50%. Kash Lang led the way with 27 points on the strength of four-three pointers.
On Saturday afternoon the Mariners (14-3) and Blues (10-7) will meet for the final time in the regular season at 3:00pm.
Camosun Chargers 61
Douglas Royals 50
The Chargers pulled away in the second quarter and headed for their 14th win of the season. Their offence was good at 42% but their defence was outstanding, holding the Royals to 31% and just 10 points in the fourth quarter.
David Finch was the leading Charger with 18 points and the only player in double figures. David Featherston Jr was a monster on the boards with 12 rebounds holding the Royals to several one and dones down the floor.
The Royals were led by a usual name, Derrick Monroe, who dropped 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Olan Smith did offer some secondary scoring and added 11 in the loss.
On Saturday afternoon the Chargers (14-5) and Royals (3-16) will duke it out again at 3:00pm.
Okanagan Coyotes 98
CBC Bearcats 87
With the win on Friday, the Coyotes (7-12) leapfrog the Bearcats (6-11) into fifth place after shooting 53% and knocking down 10-three pointers.
Phil Holmes Jr was a beast on Friday night dropping in 25 points and pulling down 20 rebounds to lead the starters. Oaklen Kowal continues to be a threat from the outside hitting five-three pointers and finishing with 19 points. Six different players scored at least 10 points each.
On the other side, the Bearcats shot 37% and did hit 16-three pointers but it wasn’t enough in the loss. Four of the five starters reached double figures led by Daylen Webb who drained 22 points including four-three pointers.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm in the rematch with important points in the standings on the line.
