Going For Gold
The Blues and Mariners square off for Conference supremacy
#1 Capilano Blues vs. #2 VIU Mariners – Saturday February 28, 5:30pm | WATCH HERE
In a rematch of the 2024 PACWEST gold medal match, the Blues and Mariners will do it again on Saturday night in Abbotsford with a berth in the women’s CCAA national championship on the line.
Both the Blues and Mariners swept their opponents in Friday’s semifinal and looked dominant in the process. Abby Betker led the Blues with 20 kills in their win while Regan Ingram paced the Mariners with 10 in their victory.
This match has all the making of a classic with the only teams in the PACWEST to finish with a winning record. They met four times during the regular season, the Blues winning three of them, in three, four and five sets respectively. The Mariners are the only team to beat the Blues this season, which was a five-setter in mid-January.
There is no doubt both schools offer plenty of offensive weapons, so this match will come down to which team makes the fewest mistakes. Both teams had their struggles from the service line during their semifinal giving free points to the other team. With these schools so evenly matched, those mistakes could prove costly.
The Mariners are the two-time defending gold medalists, while the Blues are searching for their first Conference title since 1986. The winner advances to the national championship hosted in Manitoba in two weeks.
