After a defeat in their semifinal on Friday, the Royals and Blues are right back on the floor on Saturday afternoon in what will be their final match of the year, as they play for a PACWEST bronze medal.
The Royals fell in three straight sets to the VIU Mariners, officially ending their reign as PACWEST champions. They had difficulties finding ways around the Mariners block defence and First Team All-Star Marvin Tumusiime was held in check with seven kills. They did find production from seven different players which will help with a more balanced attack on Saturday. Jakub Antosik came off the bench for seven kills and Trevor Matthysen was a factor with five kills in the setback after an injury to Niko Robles.
Friday night, the Blues were involved in the only match to go the distance in a five-set thriller with the COTR Avalanche. The Blues played outstanding on Friday night, matching the Avalanche stride for stride behind the solid performances from Kyle Hinchey and Luke Tiegan combining for 27 kills. It will be a quick turnaround for the Blues after the late-night loss on Friday.
During the regular season, they met four times and both earned a weekend sweep at home. The Royals won both matches in October in four and three sets respectively, before the Blues won their two home matches in early January in five and four sets.
The Royals last won bronze in 2020 and the Blues the season before in 2019.
