For the second year in a row, the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners are headed to the CCAA National Championship as champions of the PACWEST.
The Mariners got two goals in the first half from Conference Player of the Year Jada Kamerman in a 2-0 victory over the Douglas College Royals Sunday afternoon at CapU Squamish.
Douglas had a tough turnaround from Saturday’s semifinal win over Langara which included 30 minutes of extra time plus penalty kicks.
VIU’s fresh legs showed up early as they pushed into the Douglas end from the opening kickoff. The best early chance came after a VIU corner when the ball eventually settled for Mariners defender Mya Creed who blasted a shot just over the bar.
Keeping the pressure on, the Mariners were able to use Kamerman’s blistering pace to get past the last line of Douglas defenders in the 16th minute. Erin Jensen fed a nice pass to Kamerman who did the rest, beating Royals keeper Vanessa Chung to the left side of the net.
It wouldn’t be long before Kamerman’s speed gave Douglas trouble again as she capitalized on a turnover in midfield midway through the first half and sped away for her second of the game.
Having built a two-goal lead at halftime, the Mariners played a textbook second half, preventing the Royals from generating any quality looks at Kaiden Thorpe in the VIU goal.
The Mariners hoist the PACWEST banner for the third time in four years and now set their sights on Red Deer, Alta. for the CCAA National Championship happening Nov. 5 to 8 at Red Deer Polytechnic.
