Mariners Win Thriller

The VIU Mariners punched their ticket to the gold medal game in the women’s PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championship with a 2-1 win over the Langara Falcons.

Rachel Jones scored in the 87th minute to give the Mariners the lead for good after a wild scramble in front.

The Falcons actually opened the scoring as Chelsea Simpkins found the back of net in the 52nd minute; however the lead was shorted lived as Jones scored her first of the game in the 53rd minute.

Jones was named Player of the Game.

The Mariners will face the Douglas College Royals in the gold medal game on Saturday at 5:00pm.  The Falcons will have a quick turnaround and will play for bronze tomorrow against the Capilano Blues at 2:30pm.
