The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners opened the CCAA nationals on Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the Seneca Sting, a wildcard entry from the OCAA.

PACWEST leading scorer Chloe Gummer put the rest of the national championship tournament on notice scoring all three Mariners goals. She connected off a cross for the eventual game winner in the 68th minute.

The Mariners move onto the national semi-final on Thursday where they will face the defending champion Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers. On Wednesday the Cavaliers doubled up on the host Concordia Thunder 4-2. Cassandra Provot scored twice including the first goal of the game and the eventual game winner.

These two schools met last year at the CCAA national championship in a quarterfinal. The Cavaliers defeated them 3-1, then eventually went onto win their first ever CCAA gold medal. Needless to say the Mariners are looking for a little payback.

Their semi-final will be the last game on Thursday scheduled to kick-off at 4:30pm PST. It will be chilly in Edmonton on Thursday with a high of two degrees during the day; however the temperature will drop as the sun goes down just in time for the Marines and Cavaliers to kick-off.

The winner moves onto the gold medal game on Saturday.
