Friday morning the PACWEST champion VIU Mariners found their offensive touch and came back to beat the St. Clair Saints (Ontario) in the CCAA bronze medal quarterfinal 93-89 in overtime.
Despite falling behind 33-19 after the first quarter the Mariners started to chip away at that lead. In all there were 10 lead changes with Mariners getting the last laugh.
Offensively they shot 36% from the field and saw a pair of monster games from Shayce Johnston and Avery Snider. Johnston was named the Player of the Game following 27 points and 20 rebounds with Snider scoring 22 points as well as 20 boards. Amber Lease chipped in with 20 points of her own.
They will now face the ACAC wildcard entry the Keyano Huskies. The Albertans are 1-1 at the tournament coming off a 62-55 loss to the host Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy on Friday. They won their CCAA quarterfinal on Thursday with a three point victory over the Fanshawe Falcons 69-66.
Defensively the Mariners need to keep their eye on Augusta Kievisaite who has 31 points in the tournament so far along with Aliyah Johnson and her 26 points.
The winner of this game will have to play a second game on Saturday for the CCAA bronze medal. The Mariners and Huskies will tip off at 9:00am PST.
