The VIU Mariners represented the PACWEST well on Wednesday at the CCAA National championship, opening with a 2-1 win over the Lethbridge Kodiaks.
The Mariners started strong taking the fight to the Kodiaks outshooting them 3-1 in the first half, but were unable to score. Finally in the 49th minute Diego Corlazzoli lobbed a header over and past the keeper to give the Mariners the lead.
The Kodiaks found the equalizer in the 83rd minute; however the tie didn’t last long as four minutes later Billy Bagiopoulos tallied the eventual game winner for the Mariners with a big blast from long-range.
The Mariners will now play on Thursday afternoon in the semi-final against the defending CCAA champions the Humber Hawks who won the OCAA title. The Hawks snuck by the Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 4-3 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday. Their keeper Nick Frenati made two crucial saves in penalty kicks and was named the Player of the Game.
The Hawks have won CCAA gold in three of the last four seasons, their only blemish was in 2017 when the Mariners hosted and won the title.
This semi-final is scheduled for 12:00pm PST with the winner moving into play for national gold.
