The PACWEST champion Douglas Royals opened the CCAA national championship suffering a 3-1 loss at the hands of the host Durham Lords on Wednesday.
It was the Royals that actually opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Quinn Desaulniers blasted a corner kick that dropped in front of him into the back of the Lords’ net.
However in the second half the Lords started to find room to move and holes in the Royals’ defensive amour. They would score three unanswered goals and punched their ticket to the CCAA semis.
The Royals dream of winning national gold is now out of reach, however they can still fight to win bronze. They start that quest on Thursday morning at 9:30 PST when they face the ACAA champion Holland Hurricanes. Wednesday the Hurricanes suffered a heartbreaking loss falling 2-1 after penalty kicks was needed against the Red Deer Kings.
