It's the most anticipated Game of the Week in men's basketball as the undefeated VIU Mariners (14-0) host the second seeded Quest Kermodes (12-2) on Friday night.
The previous two meetings have been very tight ball games as the Mariners won by nine and four points. These two contests showed the Mariners' ability to come out of halftime to make positive adjustments. In the third quarter alone the Mariners have outscored the Kermodes 49-31.
The defending champs are shooting 37% from the field in this series while the Kermodes are shooting at a higher percentage of 40%. These two clubs also shoot the three very well. Combined they have connected on 29 three-point buckets.
The main difference has been the turnovers by the Kermodes due to the excellent defence of the Mariners. They have created 52 turnovers and have scored 27 points off the miscues.
In this series John Thompson leads the Mariners with 38 points and Jason Fortin has collected 28. The Kermodes have been led by Theo VandenEkart and his 42 points. As a matter of fact his only start of the season was against the Mariners, a game they lost.
This game will feature three of the top five PACWEST scorers in Thompson, Josh Ross and VandenEkart, all American born players.
It's also a match up that will feature the two stingiest defences. The Kermodes are allowing a Conference low 66 points and the Mariners "D" gives up 71 a game.
The Mariners have been on an amazing run in the regular season winning 26 straight games. Their last regular season loss was on January 16 of last year when they fell to Langara.
Tip-off from VIU is set for Friday night at 8:00pm following the women's game. WATCH HERE
