CCAA National Basketball Championship - Day 3

MEN

The VIU Mariners men`s team have finished fourth in the nation after splitting a pair of games on Saturday.

In the first tilt with the SAIT Trojans from the ACAC, tip-off happened at 10:00am in PEI, or 6:00am in BC.  Despite the early start the Mariners played a solid game and scored a 91-85 win, punching their ticket to the national bronze medal game. As a team they shot 40.5% from the field, led by Usama Zaid and his 38 points and 14 rebounds and was named Player of the Game.  Bryson Cox helped out with 19 points and Kaz Kobayashi collected 12.  They outscored the Trojans 42-30 in the paint and got 13 points off second chance opportunities.

In the bronze medal game with the host Hollard Hurricanes, the Mariners couldn`t recover from a tough second quarter and fell 108-95, getting outscored 27-11 in the second frame.

Zaid was unbelievable dropping a championship high 55 points on 19-30 shooting and tallied 11 rebounds.   Bryson Cox also had a monster game of 21 points including five-three pointers.  These two players accounted for 76 of the Mariners 95 points.   As a team they shot 45% but gave up 60 points in the paint.

With the loss the Mariners finish fourth country.

WOMEN

In the women`s bracket the Douglas College Royals fell in a tough bronze medal semi-final on Saturday 64-62 to the host NAIT Ooks on a buzzer beater.   The Royals out played the Ooks in almost all aspects of the game except the scoreboard.  They shot 37% from the field and 35% from the three point line.

On the offensive side Simran Bir came off the bench to lead the Royals with 16 points and was named Player of the Game while Sarah Jorgeson had 13 and Rachel Beauchamp dropped in 10.  As a matter of fact, every Royal on the roster played in this game and scored at least one basket.

Following the tournament Beauchamp was named a second team Championship All-Star.
