Men's Volleyball Week 14 Recaps

Thursday February 14


CBC Bearcats (1) at UFV Cascades (3)


The Cascades defeated the Bearcats 3-1 to open the weekend (25-16, 25-17, 25-27, 25-23). The Cascades were led by Josh Togeretz with 5 digs and 16 kills and Kurtis Stromdahl with 11 digs and 13 kills. Nicolas Vojnovic added 14 digs, a personal season-high for the season. Jadon Ward led the Bearcats with 18 kills and 8 digs, and Sam Kemperman added 7 digs and 12 kills.


Friday February 15


Capilano Blues (1) at Douglas Royals (3)


The Royals, with first place already wrapped up, defeated the Blues in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-19). Jordan Or had 14 digs for the Royals, and Andrew McWilliam added 16 kills. Ben Ricketts had 17 digs for Capilano, while Alex Pappas added 21 digs. Dan Caverly added 8 digs and 11 kills for the Blues.


Camosun Chargers (3) at VIU Mariners (2)


The Chargers fought back from a set down to win a thrilling match against the Mariners 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 15-13). The win gives the Chargers a shot at second place if they can defeat the Mariners again on Saturday. Garrett Marcellus had 15 kills for Camosun, and Alex Wolf added 11 kills and 8 digs. Andrew Inglis finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for the Chargers. For the Mariners, Lee Hamilton finished with a season-high 25 kills and six blocks. Diego Bustos added 7 digs and 13 kills, and Dillon Collett had 15 kills and 8 digs. Niall Cobbe also chipped in 14 digs on defence for VIU.


Saturday February 16


UFV Cascades (3) at CBC Bearcats (2)


The Cascades lost a 2-0 lead but ended up winning in a closely contested match 3-2 (25-15, 25-13, 19-25, 26-28, 15-12) that eliminated CBC from playoff contention. Josh Togeretz had another big match for UFV with 14 kills and 7 digs. Kurtis Stromdahl added 9 digs and 21 kills, and Nicolas Vojnovic topped his season-high 14 digs, set yesterday, with another 15 digs. Emmanuel Denguessi had a huge game for the Bearcats in the loss, with 20 digs and 45 kills. Jadon Ward added 14 kills and 5 digs, and Sam Kemperman had 8 digs and 11 kills for CBC. The Cascades finish 6-18, the same record as the Bearcats, but finish in the final playoff spot because of the tiebreaker.


Douglas Royals (2) at Capilano Blues (3)


The Blues triumphed in a back-and-forth match, eventually winning in five sets ( 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13). Dan Caverly had a huge game in the win with 19 digs and 17 kills. Kyle Sam finished with 17 digs, and the Blues’ Ben Ricketts had another 12 digs. Garret LaValley had 17 kills on offence, and Alex Harvalias added 13 digs and 12 kills. Drew Ruby led Douglas with 15 kills, and Nick Bridle had 6 kills and 3 blocks. Despite the win, the Blues finished in fourth place at 15-9 and take on COTR Avalanche in the playoffs next week. Douglas finishes in first place at 19-5 and will be the favourites heading into the PACWEST Volleyball Championship.



Camosun Chargers (0) at VIU Mariners (3)


The Mariners got their revenge and handled Camosun in straight sets, winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21). The Mariners’ Lee Hamilton had another 14 kills, and Dillon Collett had a strong all-round game with 8 digs and 9 kills. Zach Grigg added 8 digs and 17 kills for VIU. The Chargers’ Garrett Marcellus had 11 kills, while Andrew Inglis had 10 kills and 9 digs. Ryan Thain had 15 digs on defence for the Chargers. The Mariners win gives them second place and a first-round bye with a 16-8 record. Camosun finishes 15-9 and in third place.

Women's Volleyball Week 14 Recaps

CBC Bearcats (0) at UFV Cascades (3)

 

The Cascades handled their cross-town rivals in the first of a home and home series, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-11). It was UFV’s fourth win in a row. Kayla Bruce had 13 kills and 5 blocks on defence for the Cascades. Brittany Stewart handled offence with 13 kills, and Krista Hogewoning finished with 6 digs, 10 kills and 3 aces. Sharaya Schulte had 13 digs for the Bearcats, and Anna Cupido added 9 digs.

 

Friday February 15

 

Capilano Blues (3) at Douglas Royals (0)

 

The Blues defeated the Royals in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-21). Capilano was led by Sydney Thornton with 14 digs and 8 kills, and Jaqueline Caverly added 14 digs. Sara Perterson added 12 digs and 9 kills and Mika Chow had 12 digs on defence for the Blues. The Royals were led by 2nd Team All-Star Victoria Hocking with 12 digs and 12 kills.

 

Camosun Chargers (0) at VIU Mariners (3)

 

The Mariners defeated the Chargers in the first of their weekend series 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-16). The Chargers’ Kelsey Johnson had 14 digs and 3 kills, while Hilary Graham added 8 digs, 16 kills and 3 aces. Mariah Holmstrom added 8 digs for the Chargers.

 

Saturday February 16

 

UFV Cascades (3) at CBC Bearcats (0)

 

The Cascades finished the season with another win over CBC in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-16). Jenna Evans provided offence this time with 13 kills and Brittany Stewart added 9 kills. Krista Hogewoning added 10 digs, and Kierra Noot had 11 points on offence. The Cascades finish the season at 22-2 and in first place. For the Bearcats, Sadie Ball had 9 digs and 10 kills, while Shelby Neufeld added 12 digs. Sharaya Schulte had another 11 digs on defence. The Bearcats finish in third place at 13-11.

 

Douglas Royals (0) at Capilano Blues (3)

 

The Blues swept the weekend series in straight sets again, winning 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-16). Jacqulein Caverly continued her strong play with 18 digs, and Sara Perterson added 10 digs and 8 kills. Farren MacDonald had 10 kills and 14 points on offence. The Blues finished the season 10-14, just two points ahead of Camosun and in fourth place. The Royals’ Victoria Hocking had 11 kills, while Rachelle Flores added 10 digs on defence. The Royals finish 6-18 and in sixth place; they will face the CBC Bearcats in the first round of the playoffs.

The Mariners took the weekend series 2-0 by defeating the Chargers in three sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-19). Camosun’s Kelsey Johnson had 12 digs and 4 kills, and Hilary Graham added 9 digs, 7 kills and 1 block. The Mariners finished the season in second place at 21-3. The Chargers finish in fifth place at 9-15 and play Capilano in the first round of the playoffs.

Women's Basketball Week 12 Recaps

Thursday February 14th


Quest Kermodes (69) at Douglas Royals (58)


The Kermodes started the week off early with a big win as they still had hopes of gaining third place ahead of the Royals. Quest had 10 players with at least two points, led by Courtney Harpur with 13 points. Delainee Behrns and Shayna Cameron each added 10 points. The Kermodes were 6/14 from behind the arc. Despite building an 18-12 first quarter lead, Quest scored just 7 poins in the second and trailed 30-25 at halftime. A big third quarter saw them outscore Douglas 26-16 and regain the lead before going on to win. For the Royals, Amonda Francis had 24 points and 7 rebounds, while Patti Olsen had 13 points. The Royals outrebounded Quest 54-47, but shot just 4/22 from long range.


Friday February 15th


CBC Bearcats (32) at VIU Mariners (104)


The Mariners have been the hottest team since the Christmas break and continued their ways as they soundly defeated the Bearcats. Seven Mariners scored in double figures as the players rotated frequently. Jocelyn Jones, the Athlete of the Week, finished with 25 points in 21 minutes of play. Heather McCarthy and Shayna Worthington each added 16 points, while Jenna Carver had 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. The Mariners were 8/21 from behind the arc and 12/20 from the line. For CBC, Deanna Esau had 5 points and 10 rebounds, while Michelle Shuurman came off the bench for 7 pionts. The Mariners outrebounded CBC 59-38. They lead 57-19 at halftime, and 87-27 after three quarters. The win moved VIU, combined with Douglas’ loss, into sole possession of second place.


Capilano Blues (61) at Langara Falcons (70)


With nothing much to play for, the Falcons caught the Blues napping as they fought for their playoff lives. Needing a win, the Falcons came out hard and built a 19-16 first quarter advantage into a 37-27 halftime lead. Langara’s bench played a key role as they contributed 18 points, led by Jo-jo Crossley with 13 points. Jesseca Eng had 15 points, while Rhea Silvestri had 14 points and 12 rebounds in 38 minutes of play. The Falcons hit 8/26 from behind the arc. For the Blues, Jenn Bodnar had 15 points and Lauren Seabrook had 13 points. The  Falcons outrebounded Capilano 44-25. Langara turned the ball over 22 times resulting in 18 Capilano points.


Kwantlen Eagles (61) at Camosun Chargers (47)


The Eagles forced Camosun to wait until the final day of the season to clinch their playoff spot by defeating them in Victoria. In a close game, the Eagles slowly pulled away and led 27-22 at halftime. Sara Kurath had 14 points, and guard Jessica Villadiego had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Jeannine Yngreso came off the bench to score 11 points. The Eagles would have won more comfortably but went just 14/32 from the free throw line. For Camosun, Elyse Matthews had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Ella Goldschmid added 12 points. The Eagles outrebounded the Chargers 49-46. Kwantlen’s bench outscored the Camosun bench 24-7.


Saturday February 16th


Kwantlen Eagles (38) at VIU Mariners (72)


The Mariners finished the season off in convincing fashion with a lopsided win at home to the Eagles. Leading the way for the Mariners was Shayna Worthington with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Jocelyn Jones added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Jen McCarthy added 13 points. VIU led 19-13 after the first quarter, but used a big second quarter to lead 36-17 at halftime. They finished the game winning the fourth 20-9. The Mariners dominated the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 61-39. VIU shot 10/24 from behind the arc. For Kwantlen, Amber-Lee Kavanagh had 9 points, while Samantha McPhail hauled down 13 rebounds. The Eagles finish the season at 10-11 and in fifth place. The Mariners overtake Douglas and finish second at 15-6 and earn a first-round bye in the playoffs.


CBC Bearcats (47) at Camosun Chargers (99)


A Chargers win would guarantee them a playoff spot, and they took care of business in convincing fashion. Elyse Matthews scored 20 points and 7 rebounds, while guard Ella Goldschmid added 19 points. All the Chargers got in on the scoring with at least two points each as their bench contributed 43 points. The Chargers went 9/24 from long range, and 10/16 from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Bearcats 53-47, and forced 29 CBC turnovers. For the Bearcats, Janelle Threlfall finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds, and Sharece Thoutenhoofd added 10 points. The Chargers finished 8-13 and forced Langara to win to make the playoffs later in the evening. The Bearcats finish the season 0-21.


Quest Kermodes (66) at Langara Falcons (56)


The Kermodes ended the Falcons playoff hopes with a win in Vancouver. Langara started strongly and led 23-18 after the first, but Quest dominated the second quarter 19-5 and led 37-27 at halftime. Despite some runs and a 16-12 advantage, Langara never got close enough to regain the lead. Quest won the final frame 17-12. Shayna Cameron led the way with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Courtney Harpur added 10 points. Katrin Sandbichler had 8 pionts and 8 rebounds. Quest finished 23/30 from the free throw line, while the Falcons went 11/15. Rhea Silvestri finished a strong season with 12 points, and Jo-jo Crossley added 11 points off the bench. The Falcons committed 30 turnovers leading to 18 Quest points. The Kermodes finish at 13-8 and will play Kwantlen in the first round of the playoffs. Langara finishes 8-13.


Capilano Blues (43) at Douglas Royals (54)


Capilano finishes at the top of the PACWEST, but go into the playoffs having lost two straight after a loss at Douglas. Amonda Francis’ 19 points and 12 rebounds paced the Royals, while Patti Olsen added 15 points. The teams were evenly matched in several categories, but the Royals were 6/19 from three-point range while the Blues were 2/15. Douglas led 15-9 after one, and 26-21 at halftime. For the Blues, Alynn McNeilly had 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Lauren Seabrook added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Capilano finishes 16-5, and the Royals finish in third place at 14-7.

Men's Basketball Week 12 Recaps

Thursday February 14th


Quest Kermodes (83) at Douglas Royals (75)


In another Thursday night game for the Kermodes, the backcourt of Colorado and French-Toney combined for 45 points to lead Quest to the win. Quest opened up a big 28-15 first quarter lead, but led 39-37 at halftime as the Royals fought back. Colorado finished 7/20 for 24 points, while French-Toney went 10/16 from the free throw line to add 21 points. Sunny Johal added 9 points and 7 rebounds for Quest. For Douglas, Dustin Egelstad finished off a strong regular season with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Harpreet Randhawa added a huge double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds, and Mark Dabrowski added 14 points. Devan Haynes had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Quest got 19 points off the bench to the Royals’ six points. The Kermodes went 22/38 from the free throw line, while Douglas was 17/28.


Friday February 15th


CBC Bearcats (73) at VIU Mariners (101)


The Mariners started out slowly but pulled away to control the game and win comfortably. VIU led 20-18 after the first quarter, and 45-35 at halftime. A big fourth quarter saw the Mariners score 32 points to the Bearcats’ 20. VIU was led by Brandon Jones (24 points and 12 rebounds) and Tyler Olsen (23 points and 8 rebounds). Clayton Billet added 18 points, and Jason McKee added 16 points and 8 rebounds. The Mariners outrebounded CBC 48-38 for the game. The Bearcats’ 22 turnovers led to 33 Mariner points. CBC was led by Marcio Juk with 21 points, while guard Kevin Ford added 14 points. The Bearcats finished 8/29 from behind the arc.


Capilano Blues (69) at Langara Falcons (90)


The Falcons exploded to a 31-12 first quarter lead and, despite the Blues winning the final frame, won comfortably for a record setting season. The Falcons’ 19th win broke the previous record of 18 set by the 2008-09 VIU Mariners. Men’s basketball Athlete of the Week Jeff Chu led the way with 13 points and 6 rebounds to go with 9 assists. Elliott Manson led scoring with 20 points, while Devin McMurtry came off the bench to go 5/8 and 10 points. The Falcons used their depth to rotate their lineup, resulting in 33 points off the bench; the Blues had 9 points off the bench. Capilano was led by John Leong with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Igor Jesovnik added 15 points and 9 rebounds. The Blues finished 19/30 from the line and turned the ball over 26 times.


Kwantlen Eagles (83) at Camosun Chargers (76) OT


The Eagles took care of business, in overtime, as they controlled their own destiny in a must-win game to make the playoffs. Sitting just behind the Chargers, a loss would see them eliminated. At halftime, and trailing 48-34, things looked bleak for the Eagles. But a 22-6 third quarter saw them take a two point lead. Just as Camosun looked poised to win, Ali Bosir’s basket with two seconds left sent the game into overtime tied at 69-69. The Eagles continued to roll and won the extra frame 14-7 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Bosir finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Ram led the Eagles with 27 points, and Jag Takhar added 21 points and 5 rebounds. The Eagles went 5/6 from the free throw line in overtime. For the Chargers, Evan Woodson came off the bench for 19 points, while Trevor Scheumann had 18 points. Jordan Elvedahl added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Chargers. Kwantlen did not get any points from the bench, while the Chargers got 32 points. Kwantlen out-rebounded Camosun 48-45.


Saturday February 16th


Kwantlen Eagles (68) at VIU Mariners (103)


The Mariners defended home court and eliminated the Eagles from playoff contention, although VIU already had second place wrapped up. Six Mariners scored in double figures, led by Clayton Billet with 23 points on 8/12 shooting from the field. Brandon Jones also added 17 points, and 5th year forward Tyler Olsen finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Mariners led 51-27 at halftime, and exploded for another 36 points in the third quarter. For the Eagles, Ali Bosir finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Aaron Ram led Kwantlen with 18 points. The Mariners outrebounded Kwantlen 56-26, and their bench outscored the Eagles 37-25. The Eagles finish 7-14 on the season and miss the playoffs in seventh place. VIU finishes 16-5 and secures a bye in the first round of the playoffs.


CBC Bearcats (65) at Camosun Chargers (92)


The Chargers faced a Bearcats team that had already been eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to VIU on Friday night, but they were full value for the win. Their defence held CBC to 29 first half points as they led 44-29. Camosun led 77-54 after three quarters. The Chargers Drake Downer had 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead Camosun, and James Giuffre and Rulon Schmidt contributed 14 points each off the bench. Camosun shot 11/27 from long range, and 34/61 from the field overall. They outrebounded CBC 43-32. The Chargers finish the year at 8-13 and in sixth place. The Bearcats finish at 6-15 and finish in last place, two points behind Kwantlen.


Quest Kermodes (75) at Langara Falcons (105)


In a game that featured two of the best back-courts in the PACWEST, the depth of the Falcons came through as they gained control with a 30-8 third quarter to win by 30. Despite building an early lead, the Kermodes clawed their way back and only trailed 24-22 at the quarter, and 45-37 at halftime. After a dominating third, both teams traded shots and scored 30-30 in the final quarter. The Falcons were led by Jeff Chu with 22 points and 12 assists, many of his points coming off hard drives to the basket. Jitt Lochcham added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Jesse Jeffers added 12 points and 7 rebounds. The Falcons went 10/22 from long range, and shot 50% for the game at 36/72. For the Kermodes, Jose Colorado went 7/14 for 19 points, and Dylan Kular came off the bench to add 14 points. Guard Cartiga French-Toney finished 1/8 from the field, but 6/10 from the free throw line. Langara’s bench outscored the Kermodes’ bench 39-29. The Falcons finish an amazing season at 20-1 and in first place; the Kermodes finish at 11-10 and in third place.


Capilano Blues (69) at Douglas Royals (54)


Capilano entered the game trailing Douglas by two points, but even with the win and identical records, the Blues finish 5th while the Royals claim 4th. The Blues win gives them momentum as the teams will meet again in the first playoff game. Four Blues scored in double figures, led by Josh Reddy with 17 points and Sai Zhang with 15 points. Igor Jesovnik added 14 points, and guard John Leong had 12 points and 7 assists. The Blues launch 27 three-pointers, connecting on 10, and finished 26/72 from the field. Capilano led 19-12 after the first quarter, and grew that lead to 42-22 at halftime, a lead that held for the rest of the game. The Royals’ Dustin Egelstad had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Harpreet Randhawa added 11 points, while Krisstian Hildebrandt and Mark Dabrowski each had 10 points. The Royals finished 18/56 from the field. The Royals and the Blues finish 8-13, but the Royals take fourth place by virtue of the tie-breaker. Capilano finishes 5th.

Women's Basketball Week 11 Recaps

Friday February 8th


Camosun Chargers (48) at Capilano Blues (60)


The Blues won comfortably, but not before making it difficult for themselves as they trailed 26-11 after the first quarter. But Capilano held the Chargers to just 6 points in the second quarter – and the fourth quarter – and stormed back for the win. The Chargers’ offence dried up in the second half as they shot just 5/21 in scoring 16 points. The Blues were led by Jenn Bodnar with 15 points and Lauren Seabrook with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Elyse Matthews had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Camosun. The Blues outrebounded the Chargers 39-32 and forced 29 Camosun turnovers. The Blues improve to 16-2 and wrap up first place in the PACWEST. The Chargers drop to 7-11 and are just two points ahead of Langara.


VIU Mariners (61) at Quest Kermodes (45)


The Mariners seem to be warming up at the right time of the year as they won in the difficult Kermode Kave. Jocelyn Jones paced VIU with 20 points after she went 15/16 from the free throw line. Shayna Worthington added 8 points and 11 rebounds. The Mariners finished shooting 17/51 from the field and 21/26 from the line. The Kermodes were led by Katrin Sandbichler with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Quest shot just 2/19 from behind the arc, and 9/18 from the free throw line. VIU led 29-23 at halftime, and 42-32 after three quarters. The Mariners valuable win on the road keeps them on par with Douglas for a shot at second place at 12-6. The Kermodes drop to 10-8.


Langara Falcons (68) at Kwantlen Eagles (62) OT


Langara had to win tonight, and they did, taking the Eagles in overtime. Langara led 18-11 after one quarter and 33-26 at halftime. After the teams each scored 18 points in the third, the Eagles came back to tie the game in the fourth, forcing the extra period. Langara’s Rhea Silvestri finished 8/17 for 22 points and 15 rebounds. Jesseca Eng added 13 rebounds, while Denise Busayong added 10 points for the Falcons. The Eagles’ Haeley Williams had 19 points and 9 rebounds, and Amber-Lee Kavanagh had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Langara outrebounded Kwantlen 51-45. The big win revives Langara’s playoff hopes as they improve to 6-12. The Eagles drop to 9-9 on the year.


Douglas Royals (65) at CBC Bearcats (38)


Douglas led 13-5 after the first quarter and were in control of the game as they defeated the Bearcats. Amonda Francis had 18 points and 18 rebounds in a big game, and Taylore Carle added 15 points and 7 rebounds for Douglas. The Royals pulled down 75 rebounds and finished 25/85 from the field. The Bearcats had 57 rebounds and shot 16/78.  For CBC, Mandy Van Muyen came off the bench to score 11 points, while Deanna Esau had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Douglas shot 8/24 from three-point range, while the Bearcats shot 2/11. The Royals improve to 12-6 and are in second place. The Bearcats fall to 0-18.



Saturday February 9th

VIU Mariners (59) at Capilano Blues (42)


The Mariners make another statement with the way they handled the first-place Blues on the road. After a 24-24 first half, the Mariners held Capilano to just 7 points in the third quarter and and built a 44-31 lead after three quarters. Jocelyn Jones went 8/15 for 23 points and 6 rebounds. Heather McCarthy added 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Shayna Worthington had 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Mariners outrebounded Capilano 49-40. The Blues were led by Lauren Seabrook, Michelle Errico, and Alynn McNeill each with 10 points. The Blues were cold from long range, finishing 4/31. The Mariners were 20/33 from the line, while Capilano went 16/21. The Mariners are 13-6, tied with Douglas, and in third place. The Blues have wrapped up a first-round bye and are 16-3.


Camosun Chargers (62) at Quest Kermodes (67)


The Kermodes came back from possibly the biggest deficit of the season – by any team – to win at home and keep some breathing room in their fourth place position. Delainne Behrns, the senior playing in her final home game, hit a three pointer at the end of regulation time to force overtime. Quest trailed 14-10 after one quarter, 31-20 at halftime, and 53-32 after three quarters. They outscored the Chargers 28-7 in the final quarter, before winning the extra period 7-2. For the Chargers, it was the second lead they’d seen slip away in two nights. Quest was led by Behrns with 18 points, and Soraya Jung with 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Chargers were led by Melissa Van Dyk with 16 points, while Ella Goldschmid added 14 points. Elyse Matthews had 9 points and 11 rebounds. Quest turned 35 Camosun turnovers into 21 points. The Kermodes solidify their hold on fourth place and are now 11-8. The Chargers drop their second of the weekend and are 7-12, in sixth place based on the tiebreaker formula. The Chargers face Kwantlen and CBC, in Victoria, to wrap up the season.


Douglas Royals (54) at Kwantlen Eagles (45)


Douglas defeated the Eagles to keep pace with the Mariners. The Royals led 29-23 at halftime and held Kwantlen to just 6 points in the third quarter. Langara continued to keep their playoff hopes alive with a big win in Surrey. The Falcons couldn’t have asked for a better weekend, going 2-0 while Camosun and Kwantlen went a combined 0-4. The Falcons led 17-9 after the first quarter and never let up, despite being outscored 17-10 in the final quarter. Denise Busayong had 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Falcons. Rhea Silvestri added 9 points and 14 rebounds, while Jen Carpio came off the bench to score 11 points. Langara shot 24/79 while Kwantlen finished 19/49. Langara scored 25 points off 35 CBC turnovers. The Bearcats got a huge game from Janelle Threlfall who had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Deanna Esau added 14 points and 8 rebounds for CBC. Langara’s bench outscored the CBC bench 23-2. The Falcons improve to 7-12 and still need help to make the playoffs: they face difficult games at home to Capilano and Quest next weekend. The Bearcats fall to 0-19.

Friday February 8th


Camosun Chargers (60) at Capilano Blues (68)


The Blues used some big second quarter offence and a stingy fourth quarter defence to get a big win at home versus the Chargers. Despite trailing 14-12 after one quarter, Capilano outscored Camosun 27-15 in the second quarter to take a lead they would not give up. The Blues held Camosun to 9 fourth quarter points. Igor Jesovnik had a huge game for the Blues, hitting 11/14 from the line for 19 points and adding 13 rebounds. Daniel Dubois also hauled down 12 rebounds as the Blues dominated the glass 50-33. Wesley Dekleer added 16 points fof Capilano. The Chargers’ Jordan Elvedahl had 15 points, and Mitch Kinippelberg added 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Blues finished 7/17 from behind the arc. The Blues pick up a big home win to go to 7-11. The Chargers fall to 7-11 on the year.


VIU Mariners (76) at Quest Kermodes (85)


The Kermodes pulled off an upset at home and picked up a valuable two points in the standings. Quest trailed 41-34 at halftime, but rallied to hold the Mariners to just 14 points in the third quarter as they took the lead. Four Kermodes scored in double-figures, led by Jesse Norris and Cartiea French-Toney each with 19 points. Connor Heinrichs hit for 17 points, and Dylan Kular added 14 points off the bench. For the Mariners, Brandon Jones had 16 points, and Ryand Davidson came off the bench to score 14. The Kermodes outrebounded VIU 44-35 in the game. They also shot 10/18 from behind the arc. Quest goes to 9-9 and with a win tomorrow can wrap up third place. The Mariners sit in second place at 13-5.


Langara Falcons (100) at Kwantlen Eagles (75)


Langara went into Kwantlen and took down the Eagles in another battle of the birds. The Falcons continue to put up big numbers, shooting 42/82 on the game, including 8/19 from three-point range. Jeff Chu led with 22 points on 7/14 shooting. Jesse Jeffers added 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Brody Greig had 7 points, 8 rebounds, and 13 assists in the game. Langara’s bench outscored Kwantlen’s bench 42-11. The Eagles were led by Tristan Gruenthaler with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Ali Bosir added 16 points and 16 rebounds. The Eagles committed 26 turnovers leading to 24 Falcon points. The Falcons secure first overall in the PACWEST with a 17-1 record. The Eagles costly loss leaves them at 5-13 with no room for error facing Douglas tomorrow.


Douglas Royals (95) at CBC Bearcats (80)


The Royals won on the road with a big fourth quarter when they outscored CBC 28-17. Douglas led 42-34 at halftime. The Royals combination of Mark Dabrowski (29 points and 11 rebounds) and Dustin Egelstad (24 points) proved too much for the Bearcats. Devan Haynes added 14 points and 16 rebounds. Douglas only managed 5/24 shooting from behind the three-point line and just 28/51 at the free throw line, but still managed 95 points. They outrebounded CBC by a wide margin, 64-46. The Bearcats were led by Marcio Juk with 25 points. Hudson Naylor added 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Bearcats shot 6/35 from behind the arc, and 20/24 from the line. The Royals move to 8-10 on the year. The Bearcats fall to 6-12 and need to win to make the playoffs.



Saturday February 9th


VIU Mariners (105) at Capilano Blues (46)


The Mariners jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, holding Capilano to just 5 points in the second quarter en route to a 50-17 halftime lead. VIU shot 57% in the first half, compared to 25% for Capilano. Brandon Jones shot 11/14 including 5/6 from behind the arc to finish with 29 points and 9 rebounds. Ryan Davidson hit all of this 13 free throws to finish with 20 points for the Mariners, and Clayton Billett added 12 points. For Capilano, Wesley Dekleer went 8/26 for 19 points and 8 rebounds. The Mariners outrebounded the Blues 40-32. The VIU bench outscored Capilano’s bench 47-10. The Mariners are a lock to finish in second place, now at 14-5. The Blues loss still leaves them with work to do to make the post-season, now at 7-12 and in fifth place.


Camosun Chargers (77) at Quest Kermodes (88)


The Kermodes proved too much for the Chargers as they went 2-0 this weekend in the Kave. In a close match, the Kermodes trailed by 3 at halftime but tied it up after three quarters. But in a big final quarter, Quest outscored the Chargers 30-19 to take the win. Jose Colorado had a hot hand, finishing 10/18 and 4/7 from long range for 28 points to go with 7 rebounds. Cartiea French-Toney added 17 points and 7 rebounds for Quest, and Connor Heinrichs added 14 points off the bench. The Kermodes committed just 9 turnovers, while the Chargers committed 21 turnovers leading to 27 Quest points. The Chargers were led by Mitch Kinippelberg who came off the bench to shoot 7/11 for 20 points. Drake Downer added 11 points for Camosun. Camosun’s bench outscored Quest’s bench 42-25. Quest wins to go to 10-9 and alone in third place. The Chargers fall to 7-12 and hold the final playoff spot, just two points ahead of CBC and Kwantlen.


Douglas Royals (65) at Kwantlen Eagles (80)


The Eagles needed a win and they got it at home, knocking off the Royals. Aaron Ram hit 24 points for Kwantlen, while Ali Bosir added 19 points and 21 rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded Douglas 48-44 in the game. Kwantlen led 39-33 at halftime, and outscored the Royals 25-15 in the third quarter to take control. Douglas was led by Mark Dabrowski with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Devan Haynes had 18 points and 7 rebounds. The Royals turned the ball over 19 times, while Kwantlen had 14 turnovers. The Eagles win keeps their slim playoff hopes alive as they are 6-13, two points behind Camosun and Capilano. The Royals fall to 8-11 and sit in fourth place.


Langara Falcons (101) at CBC Bearcats (87)


Langara scored 100+ points for the seventh time this season and the second game in a row in a win at CBC. Five Falcons scored in double figures, led by Elliot Mason and Brody Greig with 17 points each. Jitinder Lohcham added 16 points and Garrett Ling-Lee had 15 points off the bench. The Falcons shot 50% in the game, finishing 39/78. The Falcons outrebounded the Bearcats 46-42, and the Langara bench contributed 44 points. For the Bearcats, Linden Willock had 20 points and Hudson Naylor had 15 points. Kevin Ford was held to just 4 points in 28 minutes. Langara scored 31 points off 16 turnovers. The Falcons continue their run and have wrapped up first place with two games to go; they are now 18-1. The Bearcats fall to 6-13 and need to win next weekend to make the post-season.

VIU Mariners (3) at UFV Cascades (1)

 

In a meeting of the top two teams in the CCAA, the visiting Mariners defeated #1 ranked UFV in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20). The PACWEST Athlete of the Week, Leanna Gildersleeve, led with 12 digs and 16 kills for the visitors. Alyssa Wolf had 12 digs, 12 kills, and 4 aces for VIU, while Sandra Veikle had a massive season-high 22 digs. Kayla Bruce had 6 digs, 14 kills and 5 blocks for the Cascades. Brittany Stewart had 22 digs for the Cascades, and Kate Bilodeau had 5 digs and 13 kills. The Mariners moved into a tie for first place with the Cascades, both teams now at 17-2.

 

Camosun Chargers (2) at CBC Bearcats (3)

 

The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 before holding on to win in the fifth set in an exciting game between two closely matched teams (25-18, 28-26, 22-25, 22-25, 16-14). Jill Ratzlaff led with 13 digs and 11 kills for the Bearcats, while Sharaya Schulte had 23 digs on defence. Sadie Ball added 10 digs, 19 kills and 4 blocks, and Anna Cupido had a season-high 20 digs.  For the Chargers, Kelsey Johnson had 16 digs and 4 kills, and Morgan Marshall had 5 digs and 14 kills to go with 2 aces. Hilary Graham had 23 kills for Camosun. The Bearcats improve to 11-8 and are in third place, while the Chargers drop to 7-12 in fourth place.

 

Capilano Blues (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)

 

The Blues handled the Avalanche in straight sets, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-23). Sydney Thornton led the way for Capilano as they ended a two-game losing streak with 19 digs and 10 kills. Jacqueline Caverly had 16 digs, and Sara Perterson had 7 digs and 9 kills for the Blues. The Avalanche were led by Andrea Taylor with 12 digs and 4 kills, and Kelsey Thompson with 7 digs and 10 kills. The Blues move to 6-13 and sit fifth. The Avalanche are 3-16 and fall six points out of the final playoff spot.

The Cascades almost suffered a massive letdown when, after leading 2-0, they allowed the Mariners to tie the match before rebounding to win in five sets (25-23, 25-15, 16-25, 19-25, 15-11). The win put an end to the Mariners’ 9 game win streak. Brittany Stewart had a season-high 29 digs on defence, and Krista Hogewoning added 16 digs and 14 kills. Kira Tome chipped in 17 digs , and Kayla Bruce had 14 kills. For VIU, Paige Wiebe had 12 digs and 8 kills, and Sandra Veikle followed up with 19 digs on defence. Athlete of the Week Leanna Gildersleeve had season-highs in both digs (22) and kills (20). The Cascades regained first place at 18-2, and the Mariners fall to 17-3.

The Mariners sweep the Cascades 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) to open the weekend. Dillon Collett had 6 digs, 11 kills and 6 aces for VIU, and Zach Grigg had 6 digs and 14 kills. Tory Zaytsoff also contributed 12 kills and 17 points on offence in the Mariners fourth consecutive win. For the Cascades, Kurtis Stromdahl had 6 digs and 5 kills, and teammate Victor Zych had 7 digs. The Mariners improve to 13-6 and stay two points ahead of Camosun. The Cascades drop to 2-17.

Robert Vanderschaaf had 9 digs for the Bearcats, and Emmanuel Denguessi had 10 digs and 6 kills. The Chargers are 12-7 and in third place, tied with Capilano. The Bearcats are 4-15 and hold down the sixth playoff position.

The Blues made it a sweep of the evening with a win over the Avalanche (27-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14). After dropping a close third set, the Blues rebounded to wrap that match up comfortably in the fourth set. Dan Caverly continued his fine season with 15 digs and 12 kills. Jarrett Massey had 17 kills for the Blues, and Alex Harvalias had 12 kills and 3 aces. The Avalanche got strong play from Mitch Duthie with 11 kills, and Curtis Stockton with 6 digs, 9 kills and 2 blocks. The Blues move to 12-7 and keep pace with the Chargers; COTR drops to 7-12 and fifth place.

The Mariners earned another 3-0 win over UFV in Abbotsford to go 2-0 on the weekend (25-12, 25-22, 25-12). Diego Bustos had a big game for VIU with 13 kills, while Dillon Collett added 7 digs, 10 kills and 14 points on offence. Niall Cobb had 11 digs on defence for VIU. The Cascades’ Adam Chaplin had 7 digs and 7 points on offence, while Josh Togeretz had 6 digs and 5 kills. The Mariners are now 14-6; The Cascades drop to 2-18.

The Blues had an easier time in the rematch, downing the Avalanche 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21). Dan Caverly continued to lead the Blues statistically with 10 digs and 10 kills. Jarrett Massey added 4 digs and 14 kills, and Garrett LaValley had a strong all-round game with 3 digs, 4 kills, and 4 blocks. Taylor Verboom had 9 kills and 5 blocks for COTR, and Nicolas Schmidt added 9 digs for the Avalanche. The Blues finish the weekend at 13-7, and COTR finishes at 7-13.

Friday February 1st


Quest Kermodes (87) at CBC Bearcats (55)

 

The Kermodes dominated in a win at CBC, using some second half defence to pull away. Quest led 46-35 at halftime, but held CBC to just 20 second half points. Delainee Behrns had 25 points after shooting 7/11 from three-point range. Andrea Eidsvik added 12 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. CBC as led by Janelle Threlfall with 17 points, while Deanna Esau added 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Kermodes outrebounded CBC 50-40, and the Quest bench outscored the CBC bench 41-11. The Kermodes improve to 10-6 and could finish anywhere between second and fourth place still. The Bearcats drop to 0-16.


Camosun Chargers (43) at Langara Falcons (57)

 

The Falcons needed a win at home to stay close to the Chargers in the race for sixth place. Trailing 26-22 at halftime, Denis Busayong carried Langara to a big second half that also saw them hold the Chargers to 7 third quarter points. Busayong finished 9/17 for 24 points. Rhea Silvestri added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Camosun outrebounded the Falcons 50-38 but couldn’t convert several second-chance opportunities. Elyse Matthews had 8 points and 12 rebounds for Camosun, and Melissa Van Dyk added 12 points. Langara committed just 12 turnovers. The Falcons big win at home puts them back in the playoff hunt at 5-11, now just two points behind Camosun at 6-10.

A big game for second place turned into a low scoring affair as both teams struggled to score, but the Royals’ defence proved stronger in a big home win. VIU led 9-6 after one quarter, but trailed 16-13 at halftime. The Royals’ Taylor Carle and Amonda Francis each had 8 points; Carle added 15 rebounds. For the Mariners, Jocelyn Jones had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Mariners finished 9/19 from the line, while Douglas shot 9/22. The Mariners struggled behind the arc, finishing 4/30. The Royals improve to 11-5 and back into sole possession of second place. The Mariners are in third place at 10-6.


Capilano Blues (59) at Kwantlen Eagles (53)

 

Kwantlen proved to be a tough test for the league-leading and #9 ranked team in the country. Despite trailing 27-11 after one quarter, the Eagles chipped away at the lead but never got close enough to take it. Capilano led 40-28 at halftime. Michelle Errico had 13 points for the Blues, while Lauren Seabrook pulled down 12 rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded Capilano 48-43, and committed less turnovers than the Blues. But Kwantlen shot just 1/21 from three-point range, while the Blues finished 7/19. Kwantlen was led by Samantha McPhail with 14 points and 15 rebounds off the bench. Jeannine Yngreso added 10 points for the Eagles. The Blues stay atop the standings at 14-2. The Eagles are 8-8 and in fifth place.

VIU Mariners (67) at Langara Falcons (58)

 

The Mariners jumped out to a 24-13 first quarter lead, and led by as much as 12 at 30-18. The Falcons fought back, but the Mariners were always able to answer and went on to win a valuable away game. Jocelyn Jones and Shayna Worthington who combined for 42 points and 11 rebounds led the Mariners. VIU would have been more comfortable but shot just 16/28 from the free throw line. The Falcons went 8/20 from long distance and finished 21/56 overall. Rhea Silvestri had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Hailey Hebron added 13 points and 5 rebounds. Denise Busayong was held to 6 points for Langara. The Falcons had 26 turnovers resulting in 29 Mariner points. VIU moved to 11-6 but sit third place behind the Royals. Langara now falls to 5-12 and four points out of the playoffs.


Camosun Chargers (55) at Douglas Royals (43)

 

Camosun handed the Royals an upset when they rode the hot hands of Ella Goldschmid and Melissa Van Dyk to a win in New Westminster. Goldschmid hit 11/12 from the free throw line, while Van Dyk went 8/17. Each finished with 18 points for Camosun, and Julia Murray added 10 points. The Chargers led 18-9 after the first quarter, and held Douglas to 13 points or less in each quarter. Taylor Carle led Douglas with 13 points and 7 rebounds. The Royals shot 1/13 from long range, and finished 14/54. The Chargers went 22/32 from the free throw line. The Royals outrebounded the Chargers 46-26, but were unable to convert the points. Camosun’s starters accounted for all 55 Charger points. The win might have wrapped up a playoff spot with 4 games to go for the Chargers as their Island rivals did them a favour in knocking off Langara. Camosun is 7-10, while the Royals are second at 11-6.


Quest Kermodes (79) at Kwantlen Eagles (83)

 

Two teams that could easily face each other in the first round of the playoffs played a close game that the Eagles won by four. Christina Brown caught fire and finished 6/8 from long range and 7/9 overall for 20 points to lead Kwantlen. Haeley Williams came off the Eagle bench to add 16, while Samantha McPhail added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Kwantlen led 38-35 at halftime, and looked in control leading 70-57 in the final quarter. The Kermodes Katrin Sandbichler almost completed the comeback as she led Quest with 25 points and 18 rebounds, including 10/11 shooting from the free throw line. Delainee Behrns added 19 points for Quest. Quest outrebounded Kwantlen 42-35, while both teams’ benches contributed 22 points each. The win moves Kwantlen to 9-8, just two points behind Quest at 10-7 for fourth place.

The Bearcats played one of their strongest games of the season, shooting 45% in the first half and trailing 36-26 at halftime to the PACWEST’s top team. Capilano won the second half 38-34 to maintain a lead and the win. Stacey Graham poured in seven three-pointers and 21 points to lead the Blues. Jenn Bodnar came off the bench to add 17 points, and Lauren Seabrook added 13 points and 14 rebounds. The Blues went 11/18 from behind the arc as a team, while CBC finished 2/7. The Bearcats outrebounded the Blues 46-40. Deanna Esau had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Janelle Threlfall added 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Bearcats picked up valuable points with a in at home over Quest. A big fourth quarter saw CBC outscore Quest 29-14 and pull away for the win. The ‘Cats led by two at halftime, and by four after three quarters. The Bearcats also went 26/29 from the line in the second half, and 33/38 for the game. Marcio Juk had 30 points on 9/16 shooting for CBC, and Linden Willock had 22 points. Kevin Ford added 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Kermodes were led by Jose Colorado with 20 points. Connor Heinrichs added 14 points, and Mike Zayaz-Duran added 13. The Bearcats move to 6-10 and are just two points behind three more teams, including the Kermodes who are 7-9.

The Chargers pushed the Falcons for a half, trailing just 50-42 at the break. But Langara pulled away with a 26-14 third quarter and led comfortably the rest of the way. The Blues were led by Igor Jesovnik who hit 11/16 from the field for 29 points. John Leong added 18 points, and Wes Dekleer added 11 points and 7 rebounds. Kwantlen shot an outstanding 14/28 from three-point range, and hit 28/37 free throws. The Eagles needed the win to stay close and are now 5-11, two points behind CBC. Capilano drops to 5-11 also; both teams still pushing for a playoff spot.

 

Saturday February 2nd


VIU Mariners (76) at Langara Falcons (83)


In a showdown of the top two teams in the PACWEST, the Falcons held home court advantage to a win over the Mariners. Langara started slowly and trailed 19-26 after the first quarter. Once their full court offence got going, they cut the deficit to 4 at halftime. In the third quarter the Falcons exploded for 32 points, and their defence held the Mariners to just 9 points in the final frame. Brody Greig had 25 points and 7 assists to lead Langara. Jitt Lochcham went 6/11 for 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Jesse Jeffers added 15 points. The Falcons committed just 15 turnovers, compared to 20 for the Mariners. VIU was led by Brandon Jones with 28 points and 8 rebounds. Clayton Billet added 15 points for VIU. With the win, Langara all but wrapped up first place at 16-1. The Mariners are 13-4 and 8 points ahead of third place Quest.


Camosun Chargers (74) at Douglas Royals (81)


The Royals needed a win at home to move past Camosun in the standings, and they got it on the strength of a comeback win. The Royals trailed 14-21 in the first quarter and 30-35 at halftime. They scored 51 points in the second half. Harpreet Randhawa had 21 points, including 8/10 at the free throw line. Mark Dabrowski added 20 points and 6 rebounds, and Dustin Egelstad had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Camosun got 15 points from both Jordan Elvedahl and Rulon Schmidt. Prab Parmar added 10 points and 8 rebounds. The Camosun bench outscored the Douglas bench 32-13. The Royals improved to 7-10, the same record as Camosun, and are in fourth place based on the tie-breaker formula.


Quest Kermodes (102) at Kwantlen Eagles (87)


Quest handed the Eagles a blow to their playoff hopes when they won in Kwantlen, staying just ahead of the log-jam in the standings. Kwantlen led through the first three quarters, but was outscored 38-14 in the last quarter. Jose Colorado had 32 points and 6 rebounds to lead Quest, while Connor Heinrichs added 19 points on 7/13 shooting. Cartiea French-Toney had 19 points for Quest. The Kermodes had a hot hand in the second half and shot 23/39, or 59%, while the Eagles struggled at 12/34 in the second half. Kwantlen was led by Ali Bosir with 31 points and 15 rebounds, and Nii-Nortey Engmann added 17 points. Jag Thakar added 16 points for the Eagles. The Eagles were 24/28 from the free throw line. Kwantlen drops to 5-12 and eighth place; Quest is 8-9 and in third place.


Capilano Blues (68) at CBC Bearcats (67)


In a game that saw 11 lead changes, the Blues ended up on top and kept their playoff hopes alive; a loss would have left them 4 points behind the Bearcats. Instead, they find themselves holding down the final playoff position. Wesley Dekleer went 4/6 from long range for 22 points and added 8 rebounds to lead Capilano. John Leong added 12 points for the Blues. The Bearcats’ Marcio Juk finished with 25 points, while Kevin Ford was held to 16 points. Linden Willock added 8 points and 10 rebounds for CBC. The Blues outrebounded CBC 53-40. The Bearcats turned 19 Blues turnovers into 14 points. The Blues led 38-36 at halftime. Both teams finish the weekend at 6-11.
