Friday November 16
CBC Bearcats (0) at Camosun Chargers (3)
The Chargers handled the Bearcats in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-16). Third-year leftside Jeremy Finn (Westbank) led Camosun to victory with 13 kills, 1 ace and 5 digs. Second-year middle Alex Sadowski made 6 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks and 3 digs. Sadowski sits second in the PACWEST in Blocks, averaging .92 per set. Jadon Ward had 15 kills for the Bearcats. Camosun moves to 5-4 on the season, while CBC is now 2-7.
UFV Cascades (0) at VIU Mariners (3)
The Mariners swept the Cascades to open the weekend, winning 3-0 (scores unavailable). Zach Grigg led VIU with13 kills and 7 digs. Wayne Woyciehoski came in to add 10 kills and 14 points on offence for the Mariners. For the Cascades, Rober Bauerfind had 7 points on offence an Nicola Vojnovic had 9 digs in the losing cause. The Cascades are now 1-8, while the Mariners move to 7-3.

The Chargers earned a weekend sweep with another 3-0 win over CBC (25-15, 26-24, 25-23). Second-year middle Alex Sadowski led the Chargers with 12 kills and 2 blocks. Fifth-year leftside Garrett Marcellus had 13 kills and 9 digs. For CBC, Jadon Ward had 14 kills, 1 block and 2 aces. Camosun improved to 6-4 while the Bearcats fall to 2-8.
UFV Cascades (1) at VIU Mariners (3)
VIU repeated for a sweep of the weekend series, this time in four sets (scores unavailable). For the Mariners, Diego Bustos led with 8 digs and 15 points on offence. Dillon Collett, Niall Cobbe, Zach Grigg, and Tory Zaytsoff all contributed with 14 points on offence. Zaytsoff sits third in total offence in the PACWEST this season. Grigg added 11 digs on defence. The Cascades were led by Victor Zych with 9 digs and 9 kills, while Trevor Nickel added 9 points on offence. The Cascades drop to 1-9 on the season, while the Mariners improve to 8-3 and are staying close to the Royals at the top of the PACWEST.

The Bearcats knocked off the Chargers in Victoria in four sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-16). Jill Ratzlaff had 7 digs, 11 kills and 7 blocks on her way to a season-high 18 points on offence. Schraya Schulte added 14 digs on defence for the Cats, while Sadie Ball added 10 digs and 18 kills. April van Wieren, second in the PACWEST in Aces, chipped in 4 digs and 10 kills for CBC. The Chargers were led by Carly Hilliard with 7 digs and 9 kills, while Kelsey Johnson had 16 digs. Hilary Graham had 12 digs and 11 points on offence for Camosun. The Bearcats are now 6-3 and sit third; the Chargers drop to 2-7.
UFV Cascades (0) at VIU Mariners (3)
It was a total team effort for VIU in the win. Tylar Turnbull had a season high 10 offensive points. Paige Wiebe had 9 kills and 3 digs, while Dani Smith had 13 digs and 8 points on offence. Alyssa Wolf had 10 digs and 9 kills for the Mariners. For the Cascades, Krista Hogewoning had 4 digs and 6 kills and would go on to be named PACWEST Athlete of the Week for her play this weekend. Jenna Evans also had 8 digs and 6 kills for UFV. Kayla Bruce was held to a season-low 4 kills. The Mariners improved to 9-1 on the season, good for first place, while the Cascades take their first defeat of the season and drop to 8-1.

The Chargers rebounded to earn a split of the weekend series with a straight sets sweep over CBC (25-22, 25-15, 25-20). The Chargers were led by second-year Left Side Carley Hilliard with 6 digs and 13 kills, while Kelsey Johnson added 14 digs in the win. For the Bearcats, Sadie Ball couldn’t repeat her huge game the night before and finished with 7 digs and 8 kills. Maria Cupido had 10 digs, and Jill Ratzlaff had 9 digs, 7 kills and 3 blocks in the straight sets loss. The Chargers improved to 3-7 with the win, and CBC drops to 6-4 and sits in third place.
UFV Cascades (3) at VIU Mariners (1)
For UFV, Jenna Evans returned to form with 13 digs and 11 points on offence. Kayla Bruce rebounded with 13 kills, and Krista Hogewoning had 15 kills and 7 digs. Bruce sits second in the PACWEST in Total Offence. Brittany Stewart dominated on defence with 19 digs, tying her personal high from week 1, and leading the PACWEST. The Mariners’ Sandra Veikle had a huge 15 digs on defence in the losing cause, while Alyssa Wolf continued her strong weekend with 13 digs and 6 kills. The Cascades ensured they stay in first place with the win at 9-1 and a game in hand over the 9-2 Mariners.

Friday November 9
Capilano Blues (2) at VIU Mariners (3)
The Mariners defeated the Blues in five competitive sets and moved to 4-3 on the season. Marco Arnold had 22 digs for the Mariners. Tory Zaytsoff had 6 digs and a season-high 23 kills. Tory was named the men’s volleyball Athlete of the Week. Niall Cobbe also chipped in 6 digs and 13 kills for VIU. For the Blues, Dan Caverly had 17 digs and 14 kills in the losing cause, and Garret LaValley had 20 kills. The Blues dropped to 4-5.
Douglas Royals (1) at Camosun Chargers (3)
Despite dropping the first set, the Chargers came back to win in four sets (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19), knocking off the #2 ranked team in the country. Garrett Marcellus had 11 digs and 15 kills and Ryan Thain had 16 digs for Camosun. As a result of the win, the Chargers moved up to #7 in the CCAA while the Royals dropped to #3. The Royals were led by Jordan Or with 12 kills, while Sam Shaw added 10 kills and 14 points on offence. It was the first loss on the season for the Royals after 8 consecutive wins.
UFV Cascades (1) at COTR Avalanche (3)
The Avalanche took care of business at home and were close to being pushed to a 5th and deciding set before winning 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 14-25, 32-30). COTR won their third in a row and fourth in five games. Taylor Verboom had 10 points on offence for the Avalanche, while Mitch Duthie had 7 kills. For the Cascades, Nicolas Vojnovic had 11 digs and Adam Chaplin had 10 digs. UFV dropped their third game in a row and are now 1-6.

Capilano Blues (0) at VIU Mariners (3)
The Mariners won easily in the return match, sweeping the Blues in three sets and winning their third game in a row. Tory Zaytsoff continued his strong play with 10 digs and 21 kills. Zach Grigg had 15 kills and 17 offensive points for the Mariners. The Mariners held their ranking of #5 in the CCAA; the Blues dropped one place to #13. The Blues’ Garret LaValley had 17 kills, and Dan Caverly had 8 digs and 11 kills. The Blues dropped to 4-6 on the season and the Mariners improved to 5-3.
Douglas Royals (3) at Camosun Chargers (1)
The Royals rebounded from Friday’s loss to even the series, winning in four sets (25-19, 17-25, 25-13, 25-16). Drew Ruby helped the Royals with 6 digs and 11 kills, while Sam Shaw added 13 points on offence and Jordan Or had 12 digs. Andrew Inglis led the Chargers with 15 digs and 18 kills. The Royals are now 9-1 on the season; the Chargers are 4-4.
UFV Cascades (2) at COTR Avalanche (3)
The Avalanche were pushed but held off the Cascades after building and losing a 2-0 sets lead (25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 19-25, 15-12). Kellan Ward had a season-high 16 digs for COTR, and Mitch Duthie added 8 digs and 13 kills. Curtis Stockton had a season-high 17 kills. For the Cascades, Kurtis Stromdahl had 14 kills, and Josh Togeretz added 9 digs and 10 kills. The Avalanche improved to 5-3 on the season.

Capilano Blues (0) at VIU Mariners (3)
The Mariners swept the Blues behind the 13 digs from Sandra Veikle and team offence. Marlie Temple, Leanna Gildersleeve, and Tylar Turnbull each had 7 points on offence for VIU. Jacqueline Caverly had 14 digs for the Blues, who are still without Rhiannon Paterson. (Set scores were unavailable).
Douglas Royals (1) at Camosun Chargers (3)
Camosun knocked off the Royals – despite a monster game from Victoria Hocking - after building a 2-0 sets lead and winning in four (25-16, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23). Hocking had 15 digs, 27 kills, and 34 points on offence in the losing cause. The Chargers’ Carly Hilliard led them with 14 digs and 22 offensive points in her best game of the season. Kelsey Johnson had 16 digs on defence for Camosun, while Hilary Graham added 12 kills. Mandy Grierson had 10 digs for Douglas College, and Kalena Connors had 11 points on offence.

The Cascades handled the Avalanche a four set defeat (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23) after narrowly taking the final set. Kayla Bruce had 14 kills and 25 points on offence and went on to earn Athlete of the Week honours. Jenna Evans added 12 digs an 10 kills, and Kira Tome had 10 digs and 11 kills for the Cascades. For COTR, Andrea Taylor had 9 digs and 10 kills, Jen Pillon had 12 digs, and Kelsey Thompson had 9 kills. The Avalanche dropped their third game in a row.

The Mariners swept the Blues for the second time this weekend and moved to 7-1 on the season. Leanna Gildersleeve had a season-high 14 points on offence. Tylar Turnbull also matched her season high with 8 points on offence. Ashley Van Acken added 4 digs and 6 kills for the Mariners. Sydney Thornton led the Blues with 12 kills, while Jacqueline Caverly had another 17 digs. The Blues dropped to 3-7. (Set scores were unavailable).

The Royals came back in a thrilling match after being down 2-1 to win in five sets (25-20, 13-25, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11) and snap a 6-game losing streak. Hocking and Connors combined again, this time in a winning effort. Hocking had a season high 19 digs to go with 26 points on offence. Kalena Connors added 12 kills and 17 points on offence. Hayley Flower-Ainge added 10 digs and 9 offensive points for Douglas. For Camosun, Morgan Marshall had 13 kills, while Natalie Delange had 14 points on offence. Hilary Graham had a season high 20 kills. The Royals are now 3-7 on the season, while the Chargers dropped to 2-6.

Despite playing without Andrew McWilliam, the Royals took a straight sets win over the Mariners (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) and moved to 7-0 on the season. The Royals Sam Shaw returned from injury with 11 kills and 17 points on offence. The Mariners’ Tory Zaytsoff had a strong game with 4 digs and 13 kills, while veteran Lee Hamilton had 8 kills and 11 offensive points.
Camosun Chargers (3) at Capilano Blues (1)
The Chargers improved to 3-2 with an away win at Capilano in four sets (25-17, 28-30, 25-18, 26-24). Garrett Marcellus had a season high 13 kills and 3 aces, and was helped by Jeremy Finn’s 20 kills. The Blues fell to 3-4 and were led by Dan Caverly’s 10 digs and 12 kills. Alex Harvalias added 12 kills for the Blues, while Armin Hosseini, a rookie, had a strong all-round game with 16 points on offence.

In a thrilling game, the Mariners took a 1-0 lead, then fought back from 2-1 down to force a 5th and deciding set, only to lose 3-2 to the Royals (20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 17-25, 15-13). The Royals Sam Shaw had another 12 kills and 15 offensive points, while Drew Ruby had 17 kills. McWilliam once again sat out for Douglas. Diego Bustos had a season-high 12 digs for VIU, and added 14 points on offence. Niall Cobbe had his strongest match of the year with 14 digs and 14 kills by the PACWEST rookie. Zach Grigg chipped in 11 digs and 12 kills for the Mariners.

The men’s Blues swept the Chargers and improved to 4-4 on the season with a three set win (25-16, 25-16, 25-18). Capilano’s Alex Pappas had 12 digs, while Garret LaValley had 20 kills. Dan Caverly added 10 digs and 10 kills for the Blues. The Chargers’ Marcellus could only manage 6 digs and 6 kills in the loss. Camosun fell to 3-3 on the season.

The Avalanche won for the second consecutive night in straight sets over the Bearcats (27-25, 25-18, 30-28). COTR was led by Kellan Ward with 12 digs. Kieren Read also had 4 digs and 12 kills for the Avalanche, while Mitch Duthie had 11 kills and 4 digs. Duthie was awarded the Athlete of the Week in men’s volleyball for his play over the weekend. The Bearcats drop to 2-6 on the year after winning their first two matches of the season. Robert Vanderschaaf had 11 digs, while Matt Lieuwen had 11 kills for CBC.

The visiting Mariners won at Douglas College (25-9, 26-24, 25-20) in three sets. Alyssa Wolf paced the Mariners with 12 offensive points, while Sandra Veikle contributed 8 digs. Paige Wiebe had a season-high 11 kills for VIU. The Royals were led by Kalena Connors with 7 kills and 11 offensive points, and Victoria Hocking with 10 kills. Douglas drops their 4th match in a row and falls to 2-5.
Camosun Chargers (3) at Capilano Blues (1)
The Chargers picked up a road win in North Vancouver, winning in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 28-26). Morgan Marshall had 8 kills and 7 blocks to tie her season-high with 15 offensive points. Hillary Graham added 11 kills and Mariah Holmstrom added 10 kills. For the Blues, Jacqueline Caverly had 30 digs and continues to lead the PACWEST in that category. Alexis Sebok had 18 kills and 22 offensive points, while Hilary McLoughlin had a season-high 13 digs. The Blues dropped their 3rd in a row and are 2-5.

The Bearcats travelled to Cranbrook and knocked off the Avalanche in straight sets (25-20, 25-14, 15-18). The Bearcats Sadie Ball took care of the offence, with 15 kills and 19 offensive points. Sharaya Schulte added 12 digs on defence. The Bearcats moved over .500 for the first time this season and sit at 4-3. For the Avalanche, Nikki Valgardson had 6 digs and 5 kills, while Andrea Taylor had 8 kills. Taylor sits second in PACWEST in Kills this season.

For the second night, the Mariners swept the Royals in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-20). The Mariners’ Leanna Gildersleeve had a strong match with 10 kills and 10 digs as the Mariners won their third in a row and improved to 5-1. The Royals were again led by Victoria Hocking with 11 digs and 13 kills and finish the weekend at 2-6. Hocking leads the PACWEST in kills.

The Blues bounced back to earn a weekend split with the Chargers (25-17, 25-14, 25-20). The Chargers’ Hillary Graham continued her strong play this weekend with a season-high 14 offensive points, including 9 kills. The Chargers fall to 1-5 on the season. Caverly had a season-low 14 digs for the Blues. Sydney Thornton had 12 kills and 14 offensive points, while Rhiannon Paterson did not play this weekend for Capilano.

In a reversal of the women’s match earlier, the Blues defeated the Cascades three straight (25-17, 25-22, 25-19). Dan Caverly led the Blues with a huge game, tallying 10 digs and 17 kills for 21 points on offence. Fifth year player Nicolas Vojnovic led the Cascades with 9 digs. The Blues improved to 2-3 while the Cascades fell to 1-4.

The Royals held home-court with a 3-0 win over the visiting Bearcats (25-22, 25-19, 25-12) and continued their undefeated start to the season. Andrew McWilliam had 15 kills and 17 points on offence for Douglas, while Erich Meyer added 19 points on offence. Matt Lieuwen had 10 points on offence for the Bearcats.

The Blues defeated the Cascades for the second straight night, winning in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-23). The Blues improved to 3-3 while the Cascades dropped to 1-5. Robert Bauerfind led the Cascades with 8 kills and 10 points on offence.

McWilliam had another 17 points on offence, bringing his team-leading total to 114. Erich Meyer also had 15 offensive points for Douglas. Matt Lieuwen had another strong match with 22 kills for CBC. UFV Cascades (3) at Capilano Blues (0)
The visiting Cascades won at Capilano (26-24, 25-23, 29-27) in three close sets in a match that could easily have gone five sets. The Cascades improved their record to 5-0 while Capilano fell to 2-3. Brittany Stewart led the Cascades with 10 digs, while Krista Hogewoning had 11 kills. The Blues’ Jacqueline Caverly had a tremendous match on defence with 17 digs, while rookie Alexis Sebok had 11 digs and 17 points on offence.

The Bearcats moved to with a straight sets win (26-24, 25-21, 25-23) over the Royals in New Westminster. Rookie Sharaya Schulte continued her strong contributions this season with another 13 digs, bringing her team leading total to 84 on the season. Sadie Ball had 13 kills, while Player of the Week April van Wieren contributed 9 kills, 3 blocks and 4 aces for the Bearcats. For the Royals, Victoria Hocking had 10 points on offence, while Megan Ramstad had 11 digs. The Royals’ record fell to 2-3.

The Cascades won the rematch and the weekend series over the Blues (25-18, 25-27, 25-14, 25-20). Jenna Evans spiked 12 kills, while Kayla Bruce continued to lead her team in Total Offence with another 14 points, including 10 kills. The Cascades remained undefeated on the year at 6-0. Caverly had another huge game with 26 digs, bringing her season total to 127 in just 6 matches. Sebok had 15 digs and Rhiannon Paterson had 13 points on offence. The Blues fell to 2-4.

The Bearcats repeated their performance with another sweep of the Royals (25-21, 25-16, 25-20). Sadie Ball chipped in another 13 kills, while Shulte contributed 13 digs. Van Wieren had 11 kills and 15 total offence points for the Bearcats. For the Royals, Kalena Connors had 15 total points on offence, while Victoria Hocking had 14 offensive points. CBC evened their record at 3-3 while the Royals dropped to 2-4.
Leanna Gildersleeve
The VIU Mariners took Gold at the PACWEST women's volleyball championships this past weekend. The team was led by 3rd year power hitter, Leanna Gildersleeve. Gildersleeve was solid in every aspect of her game. On Friday night in the semi-final match against season rival, the CBC Bearcats, Gildersleeve recorded 8 kills, 1 ace and 7 digs in the Mariners 3-0 victory.
Saturday the Mariners faced off against the UFV Cascades, one of only 2 teams who have taken a match off of VIU this season. Gildersleeve continued her strong play chipping in 10 kills, 1 block, 3 aces and 9 digs. For her efforts, Gildersleev was awarded the PACWEST Championship MVP and will be looked upon to carry on her strong play into the National Championships March 8-10 at VIU.
Jeff Taylor
The final Men's Volleyball Athlete of the Week award winner is Douglas College Royal’s right side, Jeff Taylor. Taylor, a PACWEST first team all-star, was the Most Valuable Player at the recent Conference Championships held at Douglas College Feb.23-25. The Douglas gym was filled to capacity for both matches in the Royals’ road to Gold. In the competitions first semi final, Douglas took on the reigning National Champions and rival, CBC Bearcats 3-0. Taylor put the Royals on his back in the semi recording 19 kills on 25 attempts with only 2 errors. His attack efficiency of .680 in such a meaningful match was a highlight.
In the showdown for Gold vs the CCAA #2 and PACWEST #1 ranked VIU Mariners, Taylor was once again instrumental in the Royals success. The Royals right side put forth an MVP effort with 14 kills, 2 aces, and 3 stuff blocks leading the Royals squad to a 3-1 victory. Taylor concluded the competition with the game winning kill in a see-saw fourth set that finished 31-29.
