The VIU Mariners took Gold at the PACWEST women's volleyball championships this past weekend. The team was led by 3rd year power hitter, Leanna Gildersleeve. Gildersleeve was solid in every aspect of her game. On Friday night in the semi-final match against season rival, the CBC Bearcats, Gildersleeve recorded 8 kills, 1 ace and 7 digs in the Mariners 3-0 victory.
Saturday the Mariners faced off against the UFV Cascades, one of only 2 teams who have taken a match off of VIU this season. Gildersleeve continued her strong play chipping in 10 kills, 1 block, 3 aces and 9 digs. For her efforts, Gildersleev was awarded the PACWEST Championship MVP and will be looked upon to carry on her strong play into the National Championships March 8-10 at VIU.
