Kathleen Lougheed

For the second straight badminton tournament, 1st year student-athlete Kathleen Lougheed takes home the Badminton Athlete of the Week honours.  Lougheed is in her 1st year of eligibility and is from Calgary, AB.

Lougheed continued her strong start to the season by leading the Douglas Royals to 1st place at the VIU Invitational.  She improved her season record to a perfect 24 wins and 0 losses.   Along the way she has also won BOTH singles and doubles events that she has entered in.   This past weekend, Lougheed won her 2nd straight Women’s singles event and teamed up with Rita Lin to win their 2nd Women’s doubles event.   “Kathleen has been fantastic for the Royals both on and off court” commented head coach Al Mawani.   “She has been a real leader and role model to the younger players on the team”.

Badminton resumes play at Tournament #3 on February 1-2, 2014 in Kamloops.

Kathleen Lougheed

Newcomer, Kathleen Lougheed had an outstanding debut for the Douglas Royals this past weekend.   Kathleen finished her 1st collegiate tournament with a perfect 12 Wins and 0 Losses.   Her perfect weekend play resulted in her winning the Women's Singles title and the Women's Doubles title with her rookie partner Rita Lin.   Apart from her on-court play, Kathleen provided outstanding leadership throughout the weekend.   Kathleen is currently in the 1st year of the business program at Douglas College.

In the Women’s Individual semi-final, Lougheed defeated Langara’s Florina Lau 21-10, 21-14 to send her to the Finals.  Lougheed would face VIU’s Melissa Liew in the finals and win her first PACWEST Women’s Singles title with scores of 21-15, 21-9.

Lougheed also won the Women’s Doubles title with partner, Rita Lin.   In the semis, Lougheed / Lin would have to get by the Kwantlen pair of Alisa Young and Paulina Hsu.  After defeating Young / Hsu  21-10, 21-10,  Lougheed / Lin would face Langara’s Ashley Jang and Florina Lau.  Once again Lougheed came out victorious as she and her partner Lin, defeated the Langara team 21-14, 21-10.

Ashley Jang

Ashley, the former 2011 CCAA Mixed Doubles Champion has proven she is unstoppable this whole season. She has not let her knee surgery from last August discourage her determination to help the Falcons all year.

Jang has consistently been on her “A” game throughout the season. She has an overall season win-loss record of 27-6, and has been ranked steadily in the top 2 in Mixed Doubles.

At the PACWEST Championships this weekend, Jang lead the Falcons to a 2nd place overall Provincial standing. Her true skills showed when she teamed up with partner Matt Downton in the Mixed Doubles event. Jang had a perfect 4-0 record, beating Woods/Dufort (TRU) 21-8, 21-8; Yim/Green (VIU) 21-4, 21-11; and Chung/Hsu (KPU) 21-7, 21-11. Jang’s dedication and perseverance earned her a Provincial Gold Medal and a ticket to represent the PACWEST at the upcoming CCAA National Badminton Championships in Ontario.

Charmagne Yeung

Charmagne Yeung is in her 5th year at Douglas College and in the Professional Writing program continued her fine play this weekend.

On Saturday, Yeung helped her team win the 4 rounds of team play. Yeung was entered in and won the women’s doubles (rounds 1, 2 & 5), and mixed doubles (round 4)

On Sunday, the Individual portion of the tournament began. Choi was entered in both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles

Yeung completed her fine play winning both the Women's Doubles & Mixed Doubles events.   Yeung has now a perfect 12 Wins and 0 losses to improve her season record to 33 Wins and 1 Loss.   Yeung has now won 5 individual titles this season.   "Charmagne had a fantastic weeekend and led the team to victory with her strong play and leadership" commented coach Mawani.

RuiLin Huang

Huang continued her stellar play with another dominant performance at the VIU Tournament this past weekend. In this PACWEST 2nd tournament of the season, Huang entered the Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles events. She started the tournament 4-0 leading the Royals to victory in the team competition. In Women’s Singles she defeated Even Tong (KPU) and Nancy Ho (Douglas) to advance to the semi-finals against Alisa Young (KPU) defeating her 21-7, 21-4. In the Finals, Huang faced the hometown opponent, Melissa Liew (VIU) defeating her 21-5, 21-9 to win the Women’s Singles Event In Mixed Doubles she teamed up with Nathan Choi to win the event. The pair defeated Andrew Li / Julia Chiang (Langara) and Patrick Lam / Lyndsey Nabata (TRU) in the round robin to advance to the Semis vs Mark Chang / Charmagne Young (Douglas). After defeating their Douglas teammates 21-18, 21-19, Huang / Choi met up with Matt Downton / Ashley Jung (Langara) in the Finals where they easily defeated them 21-9, 21-13 to win the Mixed Doubles Event. Huang finished the weekend with a perfect 12 Wins and 0 losses to improve her season record to 24 Wins and 0 Losses. Huang has now won 35 straight BCCAA/PACWEST tournaments in her career - without a loss. "RuiLin had a fantastic weekend and led the team to victory with her strong play and leadership" commented coach Mawani.

RuiLin Huang

RuiLin Huang is in her 5th and final year at Douglas and the PACWEST. Huang started right where she left of last season by winning the Women's Singles Event, the Women's Doubles Event (with Charmagne Yeung) and helped lead the Royals to a perfect 4-0 record in the Team Event.

In the Team event, Huang defeated all four of her opponents in women’s singles to help her team. She defeated Trina Drommond (TRU), Zerlinda Chau (KPU), Melissa Liew (VIU) and Harjit Gosal (Langara).

In the Women’s Singles, Huang was in a ‘Pool 1’ with Lacey Banman (TRU) and Rachelle Tan (Langara). After defeating both opponents in pool play, Huang advanced to the Semis where she faced Anica Arduini (TRU). Huang won the match (21-7, 21-7) and faced Eunice Chan (VIU). Huang would win yet another PACWEST Women’s Singles Title with scores of 21-15, 21-12.In the Women’s Doubles Event, Huang / Yeung (Douglas) defeated the pair of Chang / Tang (Langara) and the pair of Bartulabac / Bonar (VIU) in ‘Pool 1’ to advance to the Semis where they faced Whang / Hsu (Kwantlen). The Douglas duo won their match 21-14, 21-6 to advance to the finals where they met E. Chan / M. Liew (VIU). In a 3 set match, Huang / Yeung would take it with set scores of 21-12, 19-1, 21-14.

She finished the weekend with a perfect 12 Wins and 0 losses.   RuiLin has now won 33 straight BCCAA/PACWEST tournaments in her career - without a loss.   "I'm very proud of RuiLin as she has really worked hard to combine her athletic accomplishments with academic success," commented coach Mawani.

RuiLin Huang

RuiLin Huang is in her 4th year at Douglas College and currently enrolled in the Business Management program. After missing the PACWEST Tournament #2, Huang returned to the Royals line-up and continued her winning streak by winning the Women's Singles and Doubles. She would finish the weekend with a perfect 13 Wins and 0 Losses.   Huang now extends her season winning streak to a perfect 26 Wins and 0 Losses has won all 4 events she has entered this season.   "It was nice to have RuiLin back to lead our team on court" commented Royals head coach Al Mawani.    Huang has now won 28 straight PACWEST Events in her career - without a loss.

Charmagne Yeung

This past weekend, Yeung helped the Royals badminton team extend their lead at the top of the PACWEST standings by going 5-0 in the team competition and following that with an 8-0 record in the individual competition.

In Team competition, Yeung participated in both women’s singles and women’s doubles.  In Round 1 Yeung defeated Kwantlen’s Christine Lin 21-6, 21-6 in women’s singles. In Round 2 she teamed up with Liza Chen to defeat VIU 21-3, 21-3.  Round 3 saw her return to women’s singles where she defeated Capilano’s Bischoff 21-6, 21-7. Round 4 she again teamed up with Liza Chen to defeat TRU 21-8, 21-9. In the 5th and final round of team play, Yeung teamed up with Liza Chen to defeat Langara 21-2, 21-8.

In the Individual competition, Yeung entered both the Mixed Doubles and Women’s Singles events. In Women’s Singles, Yeung made it to the finals where she defeated Capilano’s Veronica Yeung 21-14, 20-22, 21-17. In Mixed Doubles, Yeung teamed up with Logan Campbell to defeat Capilano’s Kayzs Tamasauskas and Rosalyn Chong in a hard fought match, 22-20, 27-25 to take 1st Place.

Yeung has a two tournament perfect 26-0 record and has won all 4 events she has entered this season.   "Charmagne has quickly become our team leader and hardest worker and it's a pleasure to have her back" commented Royals head coach Al Mawani.  “Charmagne was recently named team captain for the Douglas College Royals”.

Charmagne Yeung

Yeung is in her 4th year at Douglas College and in the professional writing program has re-joined the team after a 3 year absence. In her 1st tournament back, Yeung continued just where she left off by dominating the Women’s Doubles & Mixed Doubles events. This past weekend at VIU she played a leading role in helping Douglas College’s unbeaten result in the team round robin competition by winning all 5 of her matches.  In Round 1 vs VIU, Yeung and Chen entered women’s doubles, easily defeated the Mariner pair of Bonar and Greene, 21-0, 21-1. In Round 2 vs Capilano, Yeung joined Logan Campbell in the mixed doubles event. The pair defeated Capilano’s Eddie Lai and Lindsay Tong 21-9, 21-9. In Round 3 vs TRU, Wei teamed up again with Campbell in mixed doubles to defeat the TRU pair of Nguyen and Mertens 21-10, 21-8. In Round 4 vs Langara, Yeung was moved back to women’s doubles where she teamed up with Chen to easily defeat the Lanagara pair of Young and Liang, 21-2, 21-6. In the 5th and final round vs Kwantlen, Yeung and Campbell entered mixed doubles, defeating Kwantlen’s Dryden and Chau 21-10, 21-6.

On Sunday Yeung entered and won the Women’s Doubles event and Mixed Doubles.

In Women’s Doubles, Yeung and partner RuiLin Huang advanced out of their pool by defeating the Langara and Kwantlen doubles pairs. In the Semi-Finals, Yeung and Huang defeated Mertens and Lidster of TRU 21-3, 21-6 to move into the Finals where they would play the Capilano pair of Chong and Yeung. Yeung and Huang would defeat Capilano 21-13, 21-15 to take 1st place.

In Mixed Doubles, Yeung teamed up with Logan Campbell to advance out of their pool defeating VIU and TRU. In the Semi-Finals, Yeung and Campbell defeated Kwantlen’s Kwee and Simard 21-12, 21-11.  In the Finals, the pair played and defeated the Capilano pair of Tamasauskas and Chong winning the match 21-12, 21-5.

Yeung played the maximum number of matches this past weekend and finished with a 13-0 record.  Yeung continues to work hard to recover her form of 3 years ago where she won 3 CCAA national titles.

Jenny Aronson

For the second year in a row Jenny Aronson from Thetis Island has won the Provincial Mixed Doubles title and earned a berth at the 2011 National Badminton Championships in New Brunswick. Last season, Aronson partnered with Mike Clark (Nanaimo) to win the BCs but eventually finish in 4th place, out of the medal standings. This season, Aronson and new Partner Bryan Cassels (Calemont, Victoria ) look to improve on last years disappointing results. This past weekend Aronson and Cassels went undefeated in round robin play to clinch the gold. Their most challenging match was a match that went the distance against Douglas’s  Darren Cho and Amy Leung. VIU would defeat Douglas 21-17, 18-21, 21-14 in that match.

Next up for Aronson/Cassels is a trip to New Brunswick for the 2011 National Championships.
