Jitinder Lohcham

On Friday night the Langara Falcons made their final trek of the season over to Vancouver Island for match ups with the VIU Mariners and the Camosun College Chargers.

In was a battle of 2 of the league’s 3 giants as the Falcons were visited the home of the Mariners Friday night. The Falcons faced the #3 team in the PACWEST who were 14-4 going into the weekend. Games between these two teams have typically been tight contests andFriday was another example of that. The Falcons battled hard and took a three point lead into halftime 42-39. The second half was more of the same with neither team able to pull away. The Falcons got a great performance from 4th year forward Jitinder Lohcham who poured in 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 2 blocks. Thanks in large part to Lohcham, the Falcons were able to pull out the win 76-75.

On Saturday the Falcons made the drive from Nanaimo to Victoria and faced off against Camosun in an afternoon tilt. Lohcham came up big for the Falcons again with 18 points and 14 rebounds to go with 2 blocks, and led the way to a Falcons win 84-72. Over the course of the weekend Lohcham shot an impressive 46% from the field and 78% from the line.

Brandon Jones

5th year guard Brandon Jones had excellent weekend at home as the VIU Mariners defeated the Capilano Blues on Fridayand the Quest Kermodes on Saturday. Heading into the weekend, the Mariners sat 2 points behind second place Quest and 6 points behind the league leading Falcons

On Friday night vs the visiting Blues, Jones scored 25 points, including five 3's, to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  When he finally came out of the game with about 8 minutes remaining, the Mariners were already up 71-44.  VIU would finish the game with an 80-67 win.

On Saturday was the 3rd and final league meeting between the Mariners and Kermodes.  Back in November, VIU won at home, 76-65. In January’s rematch in Squamish, the Kermodes would tie the series with an 88-78 win.  VIU once again hosted Quest and Jones followed up Friday’s performance with 18 points and 9 rebounds against Quest in VIU’s 83-64 victory. Eight of those nine rebounds came down the stretch on a night where VIU struggled to rebound.  Jones played excellent defense and did a great job of running the team.

The weekend home wins helped the Mariners regain 2nd place in the PACWEST and the all-important tie-breaker with Quest. The Mariners have another huge home stand this coming weekend as the league leading Langara Falcons come to town. VIU face Langara on Feb. 14 and Douglas on Feb. 15.

The Falcons came out in the third with much more defensive intensity and were able to build a 12 point lead to take into the fourth.
