Friday February 1


VIU Mariners (3) at UFV Cascades (1)


In a meeting of the top two teams in the CCAA, the visiting Mariners defeated #1 ranked UFV in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20). The PACWEST Athlete of the Week, Leanna Gildersleeve, led with 12 digs and 16 kills for the visitors. Alyssa Wolf had 12 digs, 12 kills, and 4 aces for VIU, while Sandra Veikle had a massive season-high 22 digs. Kayla Bruce had 6 digs, 14 kills and 5 blocks for the Cascades. Brittany Stewart had 22 digs for the Cascades, and Kate Bilodeau had 5 digs and 13 kills. The Mariners moved into a tie for first place with the Cascades, both teams now at 17-2.


Camosun Chargers (2) at CBC Bearcats (3)


The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 before holding on to win in the fifth set in an exciting game between two closely matched teams (25-18, 28-26, 22-25, 22-25, 16-14). Jill Ratzlaff led with 13 digs and 11 kills for the Bearcats, while Sharaya Schulte had 23 digs on defence. Sadie Ball added 10 digs, 19 kills and 4 blocks, and Anna Cupido had a season-high 20 digs.  For the Chargers, Kelsey Johnson had 16 digs and 4 kills, and Morgan Marshall had 5 digs and 14 kills to go with 2 aces. Hilary Graham had 23 kills for Camosun. The Bearcats improve to 11-8 and are in third place, while the Chargers drop to 7-12 in fourth place.


Capilano Blues (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)


The Blues handled the Avalanche in straight sets, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-23). Sydney Thornton led the way for Capilano as they ended a two-game losing streak with 19 digs and 10 kills. Jacqueline Caverly had 16 digs, and Sara Perterson had 7 digs and 9 kills for the Blues. The Avalanche were led by Andrea Taylor with 12 digs and 4 kills, and Kelsey Thompson with 7 digs and 10 kills. The Blues move to 6-13 and sit fifth. The Avalanche are 3-16 and fall six points out of the final playoff spot.



Saturday February 2


VIU Mariners (2) at UFV Cascades (3)


The Cascades almost suffered a massive letdown when, after leading 2-0, they allowed the Mariners to tie the match before rebounding to win in five sets (25-23, 25-15, 16-25, 19-25, 15-11). The win put an end to the Mariners’ 9 game win streak. Brittany Stewart had a season-high 29 digs on defence, and Krista Hogewoning added 16 digs and 14 kills. Kira Tome chipped in 17 digs , and Kayla Bruce had 14 kills. For VIU, Paige Wiebe had 12 digs and 8 kills, and Sandra Veikle followed up with 19 digs on defence. Athlete of the Week Leanna Gildersleeve had season-highs in both digs (22) and kills (20). The Cascades regained first place at 18-2, and the Mariners fall to 17-3.


Camosun Chargers (3) at CBC Bearcats (1)


The Chargers jumped out to a 2-0 sets lead before winning in four, (25-22, 25-23, 12-25, 25-19). Kelsey Johnson had 16 digs for the Chargers in the win, and Hilary Graham had 16 kills. Morgan Marshall had 3 digs, 9 kills and 3 blocks for Camosun. The Bearcats’ Jill Ratzlaff had another solid game with 12 digs and 13 kills, and Sharaya Schulte added 15 digs. Sadie Ball contributed 9 digs and 16 kills. With the win, the Chargers are now 8-12 and the Bearcats drop to 11-9.


Capilano Blues (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)


The Blues handled the Avalanche in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) and improved to 7-13 with a sweep of the series. Sara Perterson had 9 digs and 16 kills for Capilano, and Jacqueline Caverly added 16 digs. Sydney Thornton had another 11 digs and 7 kills. For COTR, Andrea Taylor had 7 digs and 10 kills. Kelsey Thompson added 15 digs and 15 kills. The Avalanche fall to 3-17 on the year.
