Friday February 1


VIU Mariners (3) at UFV Cascades (0)


The Mariners sweep the Cascades 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) to open the weekend. Dillon Collett had 6 digs, 11 kills and 6 aces for VIU, and Zach Grigg had 6 digs and 14 kills. Tory Zaytsoff also contributed 12 kills and 17 points on offence in the Mariners fourth consecutive win. For the Cascades, Kurtis Stromdahl had 6 digs and 5 kills, and teammate Victor Zych had 7 digs. The Mariners improve to 13-6 and stay two points ahead of Camosun. The Cascades drop to 2-17.


Camosun Chargers (3) at CBC Bearcats (1)


The Chargers fought off the Bearcats to win in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 25-11). Alex Wolf, who earned PACWEST Athlete of the Week honours, led with 3 digs, 11 kills and 2 aces. Jeremy Finn added 9 digs and 9 kills, and Chhase McFarlen added 11 digs for Camosun. Jadon Ward led CBC with 5 digs and 16 kills. Robert Vanderschaaf had 9 digs for the Bearcats, and Emmanuel Denguessi had 10 digs and 6 kills. The Chargers are 12-7 and in third place, tied with Capilano. The Bearcats are 4-15 and hold down the sixth playoff position.


Capilano Blues (3) at COTR Avalanche (1)


The Blues made it a sweep of the evening with a win over the Avalanche (27-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14). After dropping a close third set, the Blues rebounded to wrap that match up comfortably in the fourth set. Dan Caverly continued his fine season with 15 digs and 12 kills. Jarrett Massey had 17 kills for the Blues, and Alex Harvalias had 12 kills and 3 aces. The Avalanche got strong play from Mitch Duthie with 11 kills, and Curtis Stockton with 6 digs, 9 kills and 2 blocks. The Blues move to 12-7 and keep pace with the Chargers; COTR drops to 7-12 and fifth place.



Saturday February 2


VIU Mariners (3) at UFV Cascades (0)


The Mariners earned another 3-0 win over UFV in Abbotsford to go 2-0 on the weekend (25-12, 25-22, 25-12). Diego Bustos had a big game for VIU with 13 kills, while Dillon Collett added 7 digs, 10 kills and 14 points on offence. Niall Cobb had 11 digs on defence for VIU. The Cascades’ Adam Chaplin had 7 digs and 7 points on offence, while Josh Togeretz had 6 digs and 5 kills. The Mariners are now 14-6; The Cascades drop to 2-18.


Camosun Chargers (3) at CBC Bearcats (0)


The Chargers swept the weekend series in Abbotsford, taking down the Bearcats in three sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-18). Alex Wolf had another strong game as he earned PACWEST Athlete of the Week with 6 digs, 12 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Jeremy Finn had 6 digs and 9 kills for Camosun who won their 5th match in a row. Jadon Ward had 12 kills and 2 blocks for the Bearcats in a losing cause, and Emmanuel Denguessi had another 10 digs and 2 kills. It was the Bearcats’ 4th loss in a row and drops them to 4-16. The Chargers improved to 13-7, tied for third place with the Blues.


Capilano Blues (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)


The Blues had an easier time in the rematch, downing the Avalanche 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21). Dan Caverly continued to lead the Blues statistically with 10 digs and 10 kills. Jarrett Massey added 4 digs and 14 kills, and Garrett LaValley had a strong all-round game with 3 digs, 4 kills, and 4 blocks. Taylor Verboom had 9 kills and 5 blocks for COTR, and Nicolas Schmidt added 9 digs for the Avalanche. The Blues finish the weekend at 13-7, and COTR finishes at 7-13.
