Friday January 18

 

Douglas Royals (1) at CBC Bearcats (3)

 

The Bearcats bounced back after a loss last weekend to defeat the Royals in four sets (25-15, 29-31, 25-19, 25-10).  CBC got big performances from several players, including Jill Ratzlaff with 10 digs and 14 kills. Sharaya Schulte added 16 digs, while setter Anna Cupido earned PACWEST Athlete of the Week honours with 43 assists, 10 digs, 2 kills, and 2 aces. April van Wieren added 15 digs, while Sadie Ball had 6 digs and 17 total points on offence. For the Royals, Victoria Hocking had 6 digs and 10 kills, while Avneet Shokar added 11 points on offence.

 

Capilano Blues (0) at UFV Cascades (3)

 

Despite a close second set, the Cascades handled the Blues in straight sets, winning 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-16). Jenna Evans led the way for UFV with 13 digs and 10 kills, while Brittany Stewart added 12 digs. Krista Hogewoning did not play for the Cascades. Despite the loss, the Blues’ Jacqueline Caverly had a great game on defence with 26 digs. Kolby Richter added 9 points on offence.

 

VIU Mariners (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)

 

The Mariners made the trip to visit COTR and started off with a 3-0 win (25-10, 25-16, 25-15). Alyssa Wolf had 12 digs and 16 points on offence, including 11 aces. Dani Smith had 9 digs and 7 points on offence. Jenna Swetlikoff had 9 total offence points for the Avalanche. It was the Mariners’ fifth win in a row.

 

 

 

Saturday January 19

 

Douglas Royals (1) at CBC Bearcats (3)

 

The Bearcats defeated Douglas College by the same score as Friday. After dropping the first set, the Bearcats bounced back to win in four sets (18-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-13). Jill Ratzlaff tied a season-high with 17 digs and added 13 kills for CBC. Sadie Ball took care of the offence with 24 kills and 7 digs, and Anna Cupido added 15 digs and 7 kills. Victoria Hocking had 19 kills for the Royals, while Kalena Connors had 8 kills and 11 points. The Bearcats solidified their hold on third place and are now 10-6. The Royals drop to 5-13 with their fourth loss in a row, tied with Capilano for the final playoff spot.

 

Capilano Blues (1) at UFV Cascades (3)

 

The Cascades dropped the second set before winning a close third to go up 2-1. The final set was less close as UFV pulled away to win in four sets and earn a weekend sweep (25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 25-13). Brittany Stewart had a season-high 24 digs for UFV, and Jenna Evans added 13 digs and 15 kills. Kayla Bruce added 19 kills, and Janina Toljanich had 16 digs for the Cascades. The Blues’ Mika Chow had a great game with a season-high 21 digs. Sara Perterson added 17 digs and 12 kills for Capilano, and Jacqueline Caverly had 21 digs. The Cascades maintain their lead over the Mariners and are 15-1. The Blues drop to 5-13.

 

VIU Mariners (3) at COTR Avalanche (0)

 

The Mariners made a clean sweep of the Avalanche, not dropping a set in winning 3-0 on Saturday (25-17, 25-21, 25-22). The Mariners’ Paige Wiebe had 8 kills, and Alyssa Wolf had 7 digs and 7 points on offence. Tylar Turnbull did not play for VIU. Andrea Taylor led COTR with 8 digs and 10 kills on offence, and Rebecca Zemlak added 10 points on offence. The Mariners keep up the pressure on UFV and are now 14-2, while the Avalanche drop to 2-14.
