Remembering 2016

The COTR Avalanche women’s volleyball team are the #6 seed heading into today’s PACWEST championship tournament. They will face the Camosun Chargers tonight at 6:00pm.

This scenario looks oddly familiar.  At the 2016 tournament in Abbotsford the Avalanche were also the sixth seed and faced the third seeded Chargers in the quarterfinal. The Avalanche caught fire and eliminated the Chargers in four sets. They then disposed of the #2 seeded Capilano Blues also in four sets setting them up to face the top ranked VIU Mariners in the gold medal match. After falling behind 2-0 the Avalanche stormed back to win in five thrilling sets to win their first ever PACWEST gold.

This season the Mariners are also the top seed, so could lightning strike again for the hosts? One of the primary reasons the Avalanche had a run for gold was the play of Kelsey Thompson who was named tournament MVP after 10 kills in the gold medal match.

She talks with Ryan Watters about that run as well as playing in front of an outstanding fan base at COTR on a regular basis.
